Thirty minutes of the October 12 City Council work meeting was devoted to discussing fund e . bu-ines- es over-worke- d, Last fall, Risk Management undertook an inventory of buildings within the cities it insured. The buildings were inspected specifically to determine whether they met the American Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA requires that all public buildings be handicapped accessible. The library erected in 1939, not only doesnt meet ADA standards, but also has serious structural defects. Obvious cracks on the outside of the building, coupled with a treacherous sidewalk and entryway, make accessing the building a challenge for anyone. Safety- - wise, its a nightmare, commented Cpuncilman Roger Holland. Its a disaster waiting to happen. Holland stressed how sad he was about the closure decision, but said that he didnt see any alternative.! dont see how we have a choice. While temporary housing for the Kanab City Library is a possibility, some feel that its complete closure may be the only impetus for building a new one. Considering the citys current financial cond.tion, the librarys closing may not be all that depressing to the Council. The city currently spends $60,000 to fund the library. Many in city government feel that its time for Kane County to ment to donate the revenue from the old Kanab firehouse sale, approximately $75,000 has been generated. If we could get another $75,000, the state Library Board said that they would match the funds, and maybe a new buildingcouldbe built, said McAllister. But Watson doesnt feel the city has done enough. I feel devastated that the city no longer cares to financially support a library, said Watson. She says that the library was just on the verge of connecting with the Super Information Highway to open all kinds of opportunities to everyone in Kanab and Kane County. Everyone loses when a library closes, said Watson. Our city will loose a great public service and a cornerstone to the foundation of the community. KANAB WEATHER October |
