Like the time 1 was hunting a diet to lose weight, it w as not until May on July 28th that 1 realized I had overlooked Christmas. I was really embarrassed and sat right down and wrote invitations." But even after 1 had done all I could, the car would not start and I hurried in to change my dress. It was potato salad, I knew that much, because I had painted all day. Nobody can accuse me of refusing to answer the doorbell. We wqot ahead and answered the letter anyway, but the toilet would not shut off. There was no sense to it at all, especially w hen the call was for somebody else. By this time I was very hungry, but the library was closed and I still had to get the mud off the grape vines. The summons finally came and I packed up my teddy bear and went to serve my term at the Point of the Mountain. However, the bridge was washed out and the bread was in the oven. I didn't go after all because my typewriter broke and somebody killed a bald eagle. As if that wasn't bad enough, only 68 people showed up at the Republican convention to nominate candidates for the 1985 election of the City Council. Is this really the most Republican county in the state, Kathy? Sure must be a lot of Republicans outside the city limits of Kanab. Well, all I know is what I read in the papers, says the late W. The Democrats never Rogers even held a nominating convention? Now I know that we all have our special interests and are really committed to a few of them, but there are some good people around here that need to get more involved, no matter what party they support! "Experience" is the name we give our mistakes, it's too bad this county didn't just build the new courthouse at an entirely new location and leave the old one for its historical value, if nothing else. That would have been one solution, since combining the old and new architecture (style of building) wasn't feasible. Right L.R.L.? It's interesting to note here, that when one engages in a laissez-fair- e approach to the political system, he is classified as apathetic". When one engages in activities to spur the inactive into political solutions, he or she is labeled a troublemaker." Way back in high school, the seniors participated in the Voter Awareness Program wherein five critical elements for effective participation in the political process were brought out: 1. A strong desire to be free and an appreciation of our form of government. 2. Being informed on the issue of government. 3. Identifying issues with candidates and then supporting candidates based on those issues. 4. Developing a strong desire to become independent from government-becoming contributors instead of takers. 5. Preparing for government fields and service in then offering those services to the government sector either through regular employment or elected positions. (Do we all need to go back to high school?) I sincerely hope Kane County voters will get more involved in the 1986 elections, or will we all be like the librarian who Not one political problem confused, disturbed or bored her- - she simply marked her ballot in alphabetical order?" Ill certainly have an active interest in the next County-wid- e elections, since 1 still have not received any explanations or apologies from the Sheriffs department. Yours for good government, Janis Shumway Federal Disease We recently received a news release from the office of one of our Utah senators which carried the following title: bill to Senate approves bolster Federal Disease Prevention Programs." We understand, because we know how easy it is to catch federal diseases. (S.J. RecordSept. The Centalign-grinder is a unique product designed by Bryant Chucking Grinding Company of Springfield. Vermont. It makes tin ball bearings with a precision of 25 millionths of an inch. These are used in the M.I.R.V. warhead's inertial guidance system and its separation g system. Without a finish that smooth, such weapons cannot be made accurate enough to use against our missile silos. There is no other machine like it in the world, and the Soviet Union would not have been capable of producing one before the end of this century. Yet. incredibly, we sold them 164 of the machines in 1972 for S20 million. These facts and many others like them can be substantiated. I believe thut Congressman Larry McDonald, and the others on the K.A.L. be alive today if we, the would flight American people had put a stop long ago to the gift and sale of massive amounts of vital technical information and hardware. The State Department of Social Services administers the program; local labor and training offices choose work sites and arrange supervision. Families who have exhausted their resources have a chance to perform worthwhile work and meet their obligations. People living in cars can rent an apartment, thanks to E.W.P. Utah cities, counties, and the legislature cooperated to contribute $1.3 million to keep E.W.P. running until June 30, 1984. At present, only families with dependent children are eligible, but it is hoped that there will be enough money to allow single people and couples to participate during the winter months. There is a limit in all cases. E.W.P.s success can be measured by the number of people who have participated for a short time, kept their families together, and managed to find regular work. Obviously, not all of the approximate 1.000 voters are Republicans, how ever, the Democrats did not even hold u convention, nor come up with a candidate for the November election. Sixty-sipeople selected the next three City Councilmcn. The only way x someone other than the three Republican candidates can run for office, is if they run on a write-i- n vote. ll appears that Kanab voters are either apathetic, lazy, or just plain don't care what happens in the town they huve chosen to live in. The 66 people who voted at the Republican convention need to keep watching their candidates. When those men tuke office, it is your right now to holler and complain if they don't represent Kanab City's best interests. You people who didn't help select a Candidate-Republic- an, Democrat, or a type of Independent ber you had your chance to nominate and vote for someone else if you don't like the "choices" you are now faced with. Turnout was not the only disappointment at the Republican Convention. Only three could be as many selected as candidatcs-b- ut as people w anted to nominate, could be nominated. It was sad to see that only five people accepted nomina purty-remem- accepted, the choice would have been broadened to about 12. It seems that there was very little planning ahead on the voters' parts. More people could have been approached earlier about accepting nominations. And if more than 68 people had showed up to vote, many more nomination selections could have been made. The convention was well advertised uhcad of time. Now we realize that things like illness, out of town, etc. could have kept many voters away-b- ut just 66 votes is more than should have been There pathetic. plenty of time to plan to attend the convention. I'm not complaining about the three candidates. They're all fine citizens, and I hope they'll be able to represent Kanab's best interests. The complain goes out to the lack of that responsibility response-ma- ke the part of the voters who didn't help select candidates. Get involved. These people who serve on the City Council are making governmental decisions that affect all our lives. The people have the right to control the government-u- ot n the government controlling the people. It is your right, and responsibility, as a citizen to vote. A like amount has also been deducted from the Arizona customers' bills. Unfortunately, the credit will not continue to be this much in the future. Increasing power costs from Deseret G&T. a 51 property tax increase and rising interest costs are the main reasons the rates will go back w here they were before mother nature provided us with the surplus hydro generation we were fortunate to have this year. If Garkane receives a reduction in their WAPA allocation as it is now proposed in 1989 and the cost of WAPA power goes up gradually as they have told us it will, and if we purchase more expensive power from Deseret G&T at their new rates -- power costs will continue to go up in the years ahead. 1983 Large Property Tax Increase Garkane's property taxes in Utah increased 51 or approximately $26.(XK) in 1983. The main reason behind the increase was Proposition I", which was passed by the Utah Legislature, which increased taxes on businesses and supposedly reduced the residential taxes. Other reasons for the increase include property reevaluations by the State, school bond issues, and u 2 mill flood damage levy which was added on in most counties.
