Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS - Thursday, August 19, 1982 - Page Three Wilson and Dirks Woo Local Voters Two Democratic hopefuls joined forces for part of the day Thursday in Kane County feeling the political pulse of local residents and giving their views on state and national issues that concern southern Utah citizens. Ted Wilson, mayor of Salt Lake City, and hopeful for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Orrin Hatch, and Ogden Mayor Steve Dirks, who hopes to unseat Congressman Jim Hansen, were in Kane County meeting citizens and speaking with small groups while here. During a press conference Thursday afternoon in the Kanab Senior Citizen Center Wilson said we need a Utah Senator, one who will be here on weekends." He said Utah needs a Senator who is here enough to get the pulse of local needs and who will represent them in the Congress. I would be very sensitive to your input, he told the group. I can see your side of the issues. I understand deeply how you feel about exporting your children so then can find work and about your needs for a tax base, and I can promise you an open ear. He said he will listen to his constituents, represent them to the best of his ability, and that is all he can promise. Mr. Wilson was asked about his stand some years ago about the local environment and also about the job of rural mayors. He said he wished he had come down and talked to local residents before he spoke on that occasion, but said he still takes a firm stand against degradation of the environment, and feels that we must "retain something for our children. He said he supports the Alton coal project, but said more needs to be done than the mining of the coal. The government needs to get coal ports available o i the coast so local coal can be exported to the orient and other areas. Also liquification an gasifica- . w tei! tion of coal now is about the only way it will be able to compete on the market, he said. Concerning taxes, federal deficite and a balanced budWilson said get, Mayor have gotten out of "things hand; we must reduce the federal deficite and balance the budget. 1 would vote for a balanced budget even if it meant I may not be there the next election. He feels the present administration is running a smoke screen with their balanced budget talk, and that it is only a campaign issue. "Unless there is fairness, their will be no sacrifice, he said, indicating that unless all are taxed fairly, those who are paying will not be happy. He said for the person bringing home $200,000 to pay no taxes while the average w age earner ($23,000) to pay heavily will not bring any sacrifice from the latter. "But if there is equality, there will be sacri- yy Congressman Jim Hansen deduction for Congress and then said he didn't know what he was voting for. "I find this very disturbing. Dirks said. Concerning the Integral Vista concept being proposed by Gary Hart of Colorado, Dirks said; 1 oppose it to the extent it would lock up resources and stymie industrial development, however, I feel that we must guard the environment against undo degradation. In further criticism of his opponent Dirks said: "Congressman Hansen stated that he would sink or swim with the administration. I reserve for myself the right to disagree with the president, with the administration, or with any and all other Congressmen on any issue. The people of Mt. Carmel want to thank you for work done on our road to the cemetery. A little gravel and some culverts have made it possible to get to the cemetery without problems, even when it rains of snows. Our special thanks, too, to Vane Campbell and his crew of men for doing the work, and to Commissioner Esther Heaton for acknowledging our need and passing on our request. Thank You .
