Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS - Thursday, May 7, 1981 - Page Five Two Local Students Senior Dinner Help Attend Leadership Meet Two local students, Robert Kropf, a sophomore at Kanab High School, and Shannon Palmer, a sophomore at Valley High School, have returned from day seminar held in Salt Lake City, May 1, 2 and 3. Robert and Shannon were lf 5 & y, k selected by their schools to participate in the Hugh O'Brian Youth Foundation International Leadership Seminar because of their demonstrated leadership ability, cooperation with others, sensitivity to the needs of others, ability to relate to new pursuits and acquaintances, and the desire to learn and share knowledge and experience with others. The Kane County repre- - hi sentatives were joined by 57 other sophomores from throughout the state of Utah, when they met with prominent leaders in business, government. education and the professions. The purpose of the Hugh O'Brian Foundation, established in 1958. is to give outstanding 10th grade leaders a better understanding of the economic system, which motivates productive activity in our society, and an appreciation of our democratic process. This was the first year that Utah had participated in the Foundation, joining seven other states as for a total of 44 states in which seminars are being conducted in 1981. Six other states are targeted for participation in 1982. at which time all 50 states will conduct seminars. Robert and Shannon were first-timer- I !; sponsored the by GFWC-Kana- b Women's Civic Club, the Utah Federation of Womens Clubs, and the Salt Lake City Jaycees. They will attend the May 28 meeting of the Kanab Womens Civic Club, at which time they will report their observations and experiences as a result of their attendance at the seminar. Special thanks to Juanita Terrel, who chaired the dinner; Anna Deal Black and young helpers for serving; Sherman Crosby and assistants for putting up and taking down the tables; Carol Crosby for decorations; Karl Jameson as the auctioneer. Furnishing the food for the dinner was: Bernell Lewis furnishing the meat; Klean Kut Product furnished the green salads; Canyon Foods, Happy Service and Husky Shopper Stopper furnished most of the other food items; Ruth Johnson, the corn; the Ladies Literary League and the Civic Club and KCR people, the pies; Walt and Babe Comford took care of ticket sales and the baked goods sale. And a big thanks to all else who helped with the successful evening, to those who attended and also to those who donated to the auction. Funeral Held For Mabel H. The Capp Fmish-It-Yourse- lf Funeral services were conducted in Kanab Monday, May 4, for Mabel Emma Howard Newton, age 83. who died Friday. May 1. 1981 in Kanab. Mrs. Newton was born March 17, 1898 in Michigan to Frank B. and Luella Hooper Howard. She married William B. Newton July 5. 1971 in Las She was a Vegas. Nevada. ; registered nurse and owned two nursing homes in California: Hollyview Samtorium and Eden Guest Home. She was a member of the LDS Church, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Pocahontas Lodge. and her Mrs. Newton husband. Newt, moved to Kanab from Thousand Oaks. California in March of this year and are in the process of building a home in Kanab Creek Ranchos. Mabel was a loveable, generous person. She was a great cook, an excellent seamstress, an oil painter and loved to travel. She is survived by her husband of Kanab. brothers Maurice and sisters-in-laand Arline Shepherd of Kanab and Percy and Erma Newton of Mona. Utah. She attended Arizona State College and has completed various specialized courses offered bv the American Institute of Banking. Superintendent William Herr noted that for the first four months of 1981 visitation is up 1,049 (19 percent) over 1980. During April there were 2,812 visitors. an increase of 562 (20 percent) over April 1980. Crowds remain relatively small, so visiting the area soon, persons can expect a relaxed, slow pace to enjoy the grounds and historic buildings.
