Goostree District Conservationist I have been a long time getting an article in the paper, but it has come to be. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you that I am really enjoying working with the people in your district and hope it continues to be fruitful. Today would be a good time to bring the town up to date on the development of the Fredonia watershed project. Congress has made funds available to this project close to one million dollars and construction contracts could be let if the town had voted to put in their part of the funds. In order for the town to do their part they will have to know how much money will be considered their responsibility and then hold an election. But before the vote can be held, land easement cost on all lands involved must be obtained and this must be done by the people or their representatives. The Soil Conservation is prohibited by law to work on matters such as land easements. The lands involved would include private, state and BLM acerage. Forms have been supplied to the Flood Control Board and they should now be getting the figures. There is a chance of cutting the cost of land easements by several thousand dollars if the members of the Flood Control Board will meet with the State Land Department and the BLM in Phoenix and I am sure they are planning to do so, sirce they were elected to represent Fredonia and this would be in the better interest of the town. Both departments are willing to work with people if their regulations will allow. Encourage your board to get the easements as the watershed not only brings peace of mind from flooding and possible harm to you or your children, but land values should increase, croplands wont be covered with silt, town development wont be hindered. Also, I heard that the town was considering the development of a sewage system as a sanitary measure, but was informed the flood control measure should be installed before such a loan would be made. Think about these benefits and also remember, the floods are on a seven-yea- r frequency and the last flood was in 1963. This doesnt mean the flood will come this spring, but according to averages can occur any time. The cost of one good flood would probably be as much, maybe more, than the town needs to meet their part. Members of the present board are Pat Jensen, chairman; Gene Mitchell, Ray Anderson and Afton Brooksby. Go to these people and talk to them. If they cant answer your questions, contact my office; Ill be glad to help in any way possible and between the board and myself, I am sure problems can be worked out. And the dogs must go! Thats the latest word from law enforcement. Loose dogs without dog tage after February 20 will be destroyed, and loose dogs at night, with or without tags, will be destroyed. A local citizen came to my office asking that a word be said concerning dogs running in packs. Seems this is the time of year that dogs like to get together in the early morning, and too often they cause trouble, especially with young calves and cows. This citizens said he didnt like to kill dogs, but wondered if that is what he may just have to do. He calls his wife Angel because shes always up in the air, always harping on something and never has anything to wear. Speaking of not paying attention. We goofed (again) last week in our story about Mrs. Louisa Brinkerhoff. Our story stated that she had been a widow for 2 years. Actually it should have read 27 years. Every now and then our typesetting machine gets a sticky key and we have these problems. Well this time it was the 7. It hasnt been working right for a week or two. Not only that, weve been having a few problems with the lower case s also, and one or two others. Actually, were just trying to cover up for a poor job of typesetting and proof reading. Anyway, our apologies to Mrs. Brinkerhoff. This writer was unable to attend the game at Beaver last week. Inasmuch as Kanab p lost, who wants a anyway, might be a feeble excuse for not reporting the game. Lazy, might be more like it. Anyway the Cowboys lost by about ten points, which still leaves them in top contention in the diKHS-Beav- re-ca- vision. The league-leadin- g Valley Buffaloes were defeated by Parowan, but only in a practice - tilt, so they are still riding high in the saddle of the Garfield Division, and hopefully will come out on top. This week they were rated number 5 in the state Class B by the Salt Lake Tribune. Stake volleyball clinic awards 25 as LEGAL NOTICE official 'officials' NOTICE TO WATER USERS Dale E.
