Show Page Three February SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS, Kanab, Utah 6, 1969 by Jim Carrico Jackie Sorenson from Kane County is one of the main cegs in the machinery of the 38th Utah State Legislature. Jackie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Burke Sorenson of Orderville, has many titles and much work that she has to do. This session she is trained as a PBX (telephone switchboard) operator. Last session Jackie recorded all of the speeches in the House of Representatives and served as a messenger. Some days, Jackie is busy filling all three positions. In addition, Jackie admits to being one of the unpaid lobbyists for Kane County. As Jackie says, After all, we know firsthand the needs and wants of our county. Besides, if we dont know our family and friends really tell us al! about it, and wed better use every opportunity thats given to us. The working day for this Valley girl begins at eight each morning that the House meets. She says, Were really busy Just as soon as I get there. You wouldnt believe how many people want to talk to their This is the representatives. first year that this close communication has been possible. Now, there is a phone at each representatives desk so that he can still be on the floor for debates and roll call votes and yet hear of the needs and interests of the people. In fact, the work load because of this new arrangement has been so heavy that Jackie and her associate, Vickie Davis from Vernal, have had only one chance to get away from the board to go to lunch since the beginning of the session. They have to eat right on the job. Jackie says, Im always afraid some one will call when my mouth is full. Can you see me trying to help them then? Its just another one of those occupational hazards. When asked for the job she liked the most, Jackie said, Im really enjoying what Im doing now. Its new and different. One thing though, you cant hear what is happening on the floor. It was fun on the floor as a messenger and also on the transcribing and audio console. The one job I know I wouldnt like is being a representative. Those men really have to work hard. They put in such long hours and youd be surprised at tne amount of guff they have to take from the voters. You can have it! Representative Sid Atkin is Jackies representative. He ser- ves District 69 Washington Counties. He is a freshman in the House of Representatives. Concerning Mr. Atkins performance, Jackie said, From what Ive see and heard, I think hes doing a good job. He really studies the material. This place isnt easy to get used to but Mr. Atkin seems right in the swing of things. One thing I really like is the way he tries to consider what is in the best interests of our area. I feel thats very important. share an Jackie and apartment a few blocks from the Capitol. After all, its a lot less expensive this way than in a hotel. Besides since were not legislators, we have quite a bit of free time and we can keep up an apartment. Our place is really quite nice. Cenerally, the two girls are able to leave about five each evening. As Vickie has said, Were not supervisors who seem to live up here. The Tigers jumped into the scoring ring first and immediately began to press the Cowboys. Jackie considered this a highly interesting experience. We met the Governor, the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives and their wives. The governor doesnt have a mansion, but it is truly a beautiful home. I had wanted to see this house and it was as nice as I expected. The view of Salt Lake is magnifi- cent especially at night with all of the many colored lights. Besides these other officials, I met Vernon Romney, the new Utah Attorney General. We next discussed politics and what role Jackie would want to play in it. She cringed at the questions and answered, Me in politics? I think we all should be active and concerned about what happens in government. We should work at it year round and not just during September and October of each election year. I really believe that more 16-1- 25-2- 8 believe that I am helping to make things better by my joining in. Asked if she would like to work during the next session, Jackie said, Oh, definitely if they will have me. I've tried not to cut off the representatives that are in charge of the patronage when they are on the telephone. Considering the versatility and charm of this Kane County native, there shouldnt be much doubt that shell be a periodic employee of the State s of Utah and a lobbyist for Kane Countys interests for many years to come. first-clas- sion. The Cowboys caught fire as the second half began and had lead with 4:58 pulled to a left in the period. The Cowboys were shooting better and working the boards right. They stretched their lead to 28-with 1:25 minutes remaining, and it looked like it might be a rout for the Cowboys. However, the Tigers, would not say die, and they really came to life, scoring six straight for ending the third period 27-3- 7 46 36-4- 6 Kanab. Add to that the 8 in the last quarter by herman Cox and two by Fern Cox and that is a good output from the guard line, 30 points. Both Sherman and Vern are fine ball players They lack experience, but are progressing. Leon, Kcarys replacement and Jim Hoys Mario Spencers replacement both played well. Also off the bench was sixth man Ed Hepworth who played well to contribute four points to our cause. The starting five worked well together with Mario standing out along with Keary in scoring. Mario hit 17 and played outstanding defensively along with Doug Carroll who has been improving with each game. Dougs rebounding was impressive. He got high and kept hold of the ball. The JV played an impressive game. Doug Sorensen scored 14 to lead in scoring with Brent Brinkerhoff, 9; Jim Hoyt, 8; Sherman Cox, 6; aad Dan Chamberlain 7. Wednesday the Buffs played Panguitch for the league lead. Score was not in by press time. Lynx Exceed Century Mark In Defeat Of Salome Bulldogs wins and one loss. Saturday the Cowboys will travel to Enterprise to test the winless Wolves on their home ground. Enterprise gave Cedar a real scare last weekend, and certainly cannot be counted on to lie down. They would sorely like to finish the season with at least one win, at anyones interests.
