Sis Months Weter And Housing Problems There are many problems in this complex world today, and a small town such as Kanab is not Kanab Chamber of Commerce Kanab. Utah Attention: Duke Aiken Fredonia, Feb. 23. 1965 Southern Utah News Kanab, Utah Dear Duke: Dear Sirs: just talked to Mr. L C. Romney, Director of F.HA. in the State of Utah and he advised that Kanab was on ffie unapproved list for F. H. A. Financing because of our water not meeting state health requirements. ' We have quite a few employees desiring homes In Kanab, and F.H.A. is about the only route to go for Finance. There Is a builder available who has the money arranged for six homes in Kanab, but his hands are tied because of the water situation. Any help the Chamber could give us would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Mack Frost, Plant Manager 1 During the past few weeks movements have been started to try to obtain new homes here, homes that are needed for workers who wish to locate in Kanab and be close to their work at the Kaibab Lumber Mill In nearby Fredonia. Financing, always a problem here, is made even more difficult because of the apparent lack of attention to our culinary water in meeting State health requirements. On this page are two letters which have come to our attention on this matter, which we publish in full. being sure of our ground, and to try to aid in establishing true facts for public consumption, we went further and got in touch with the Utah State Department of Health and talked to Mr. Hurst and Mr. Hancock. We were given the following facts in relation to Kanab's unsatisfactory condition on our water supply. On December 15, 1963 a letter stat'ng the need for dorination and necessary facilities was Issued from the State office to Kanab. Apparently there has been no work done in this line. A meeting has now been set for the week of March 11 to 15 of this year to work further on this by the State Health Office and Kanab City. State health requirements for a water system such as Kanab's, where we have springs as part of the water source, must have regular monthly samples taken and sent in for tests. We were given the following on the past years samples: In January 1964 no samples were received, therefore the State Health Department classified Kanab as unsatisfactory. In February 8 samples were sent in and proved satisfactory. Four samples in March proved the same. In April and May no samples were sent In, therefore the classification was unsatisfactory. In June 15 samples were sent in and 24 percent of the tests showed unsatisfactory. In July 23 percent unsatisfactory; August 17 percent the same and in September 30 percent were unsatisfactory. Again in October, November and December no samples were sent for tests and we received the unsatisfactory classification. Home construction in Kanab has been at a near standstill during the past several years. We know of quite a number of people who would like to build, besides the six homes mentioned in one of these letters, lets not let this matter of neglect continue in our water system, to the tune of keeping several hundred thousands of dollars in needed construction from going forward.
