This is a item that can rather be installed in almost any type of vehicle, its function being to reduce the force behind the blow that kills and injures people in automobile mishaps. R search has been conducted on the seat belt for the last seven years, and in 1958, the Congressional Subcommittee on Traffic Safety called in a group from the Automotive Crash Injury Research of the Cornell University Medical College to testify in a hearing on seat belts. After listening to arguments both for and against, the report was summed up as follows. It is the opinion of the Subcommittee on Traffic Safety, after having listened to many witnesses, having asked them many questions, and having carefully studied all the data presented, that seat belts, properly manufactured, and properly installed, are a valuable safety device and careful consideration for their use Ihould be given by the driving public. House Report 1275. Here are the statistics that the research team offered the Sub-committee, using 700 cases, each case with a seat belt was matched with a similar case where a seat belt was not used. The results of the mishaps are as follows: Oc- cupants injured without seat belts with seat belts 29.9. 75.57c. Occupants killed, no belts . 17.4. with belts 2.2. It is a demonstrated fact that safety belts can cut possibility of being injured as much as 607o. Nothing that costs so little ever did so much good. One of the important things about a scat belt is that they will prevent ejection from the vehicle. Cornell University says that ejected occupants Suffer fatal injuries five times as often as those who are able to remain inside. Two of, the most recent accidents that happened in Kane County involved seat belts. In both cases, the people involved used a lot of praise in evaluating this safety device. Operators that have used safety belts have indicated that the inconvenience of buckleing and unbuckloing is practically nil; as a mater of fact, it becomes habit, and the driver will strap himself in and be almost unaware of the firm tug of the belt.
