Mary Ellen (Nell) Glazier received this honor and was also chosen at the fair as the Good Neighbor of Kane County for 1960. Sincere Clazier. congratulations Mrs. What is the worthy work of mothers? Are not homemaking and the vocation to housekeeping which they are called. I have in mind a very dear lady who has fulfilled her vocation as since she was thira home-make- r teen years old.. She was born April 8. 1884 at Johnson Kane Co. Utah. The daughter of Robert and Ellen Laws. Her Mother died when she was thirteen, leaving three children, Mary Ellen who was the oldest assumed the responsibility and took over the household work, and was truly a sister and mother to her brother and sister. She was married when she was 18 years of age, Nov. 18, 1902 to John William Glazier Jr. She was the mother of seven boys and one girl. Mary Ellen Glaziers home w'as always open to her childrtns friends. House parties by the score was held each year with the seven children bringing their crowd Ume after time. Most of her early life was spent living in Johnson, Utah. While her family was young, she knew the value of work, which usually proves to be a blessing. Her motto has always been, "Idle hands read ily get into mischief. She served as a postmaster for many years and managed a small grocery store, along with her household ' duties, such as aiding her husband in milking cows, making cheese and butter, making soap and doing her family wash with a tub and wash board, and the ironing with the sad-iroheated on an old fashioned stove heated with wood. Here at Johnston there was no hotels so Mary Ellen kept the travelers at 25c a meal few ever offered to pay, nor did they pay for the feed their horses ate. She moved her family out of their beds, if it was stormy and gave the beds to the travelers, while in summer her family of boys dept on the bay at the barn. She has often told that when her nights work was finished In the winter, she had to go to bed because there was no room around the fire left, with the family and travelers brother lived with her for several years at Johnson. She sold her butter and eggs and sent the money to her brother while he was a missionary for his church. There were no Doctors or nurses, so she filled this role to strangers as well as neighbors. She moved to Kanab Utah, 1917, where she and her husband and family built a house and they have lived here since making Kanab their home. She is now 76 years of age. , She has always been a wonderful neighbor to everyone, in sickness lending a helpful hand, first to serve, and bringing comfort to those in need. There was no hospital or mortuary in Kanab in those early days and Mary Ellen spent many hours at the side of a sick bed or at the time of death she helped make the clothes, feed the family and her comforting ways gave hope and peace to those in sorrow. I pay great tribute to Mary Ellen Glazier, as a true Latter Day Saint Mother, neighbor, and friend. She has served many years in working in the church serving close to forty years as a relief society teacher, also as a counselor and sec. to the Relief Society and a primary teacher. Today, when ever she assists in quilting she keeps the crowd laughing with her wit" and humor. To add to her many capabilities, sister Glaz ier possesses a bright sweet spirit, a deep humility, and an abiding tetimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Her warmth and wholesomeness, her genuine and sincere love are possessions she has which make her a valued neighbor and friend to all who know her. She is loved by her family and friends. We hope for her health to improve so that we can enjoy her for many years yet One of her fine traits of character is to speak the "best of everyone. Sister Glazier does her own house work. Mending and patching for her childrens families, and neighbors is one of her hobbies. She does a great deal of handwork, embroidering pillow cases, making quilts, and giving them to her family, friends, and neighbors. She has seventeen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Her family loves to visit with her and partake of her cheerful spirit, and most of all her delicious baking which she sends to many neighb- Do It Yourself with CI1AKH Ruth G.
