Rose What is more beautiful than a ear of corn served piping hot when youre god and hungry? Those golden ears of corn look pretty good to the com too; otherwise, so many of them wouldnt get Into our com. Usually, the corn earworm moths appear in late June or early July. The female moths begin laying eggs soon after they arrive. These eggs are deposited singly on the newly formed com silks, tassels and other parts of the plants. Earworm eggs hatch into worms a few days after they are laid. The tiny worms feed and crawl down the silks, working their way to the newly formed kernels of com. They feed on the kernels until they are fully grown. This takes from two to four weeks, depending upon the temperature. When fully grown, the worms leave the ears of corn and enter the soil to depths of one to eight inches beneath the surface. There they change Into the pupal or resting stage. About two weeks later, adult moths emerge, ready to mate and lay the summer generation of corn earworm eggs. Incidentally, this same moth or worm is called the tomato fruit worm when it lays its .eggs on tomatoes. ear-wor- Mrs. Eugene Mitchell and sons. I'm sure some of you are asking, What can we do about it? The most effective control measures we have had in Utah is dusting with DDT. A 10 DDT dust will give effective con. trol if applied to the silks witji a small paint brush or a puff duster or a jar with a perforated lid. There should be a minimum of three applications, with the first application being made as soon as the first fresh silks appear. The other two applications should follow this every three days. If this schedule is well timed, you may expect to harvest corn with 60 of the ears free of worms, 35 with top 'injury only, and the remaining 5 with severe injury. The above treatment also will help and is the best we know to control those little black beetles called nitidulid beetles that appear in much of our corn. Before I stop, Id like to remind you that DDT is poisonous and should be handled with care. I surely do hope that youll be able to enjoy your (torn without having your enjoyment spoiled by the corn earworm. - BRITISH TEMPLE Join Our Tour Dedication al LOIIDOII, EIIGLAIID Sept. 7, 1958 Included in a tour of GREAT BRITAIN OF EUROPE and visiting AND THE CONTINENT Swiss Brussels Worlds Fair Temple at Berne.
