Bracken Lee Sunday announced he would be an independent candidate for United States senator in opposi- tion to Arthur V. Watkins, who is expected to be the Republican candidate to succeed himself as Utahs senior senator. Mr. Lee, who served two terms as governor, ran for that office for an unprecedented third term two years ago as an independent. He was defeated by George Dewey Clyde, present governor, but polled more than 90,000 votes. Mr. Lees annoncement for use of the press follows: After making a check of the delegates to the Republican State convention, I am convinced that I would have sufficient support to assure my nomination as one of the candidates for the United States Senate. It is hard for any man to refuse nomination for high public office by the political party he has supported in the past, and especially so when so many members of this party have been good friends and supporters. In spite of this, I feel that I would not be honest with myself, nor fair to my friends, if I would seek the Republican nomination. To do so would compromise have always takthe position en in the past, namely, that the welfare of my country must be placed ahead of party success and that a political party only deserves respect and support so inlong as it acts in the best terest of all the people. Continuously, since 1932, .both nationally and in this state, the Democratic party has repudiated its platform and its pledges. It has established a program which has all but completely disregarded the Constitution, the sovereignty of our states, and the freedom of our people. The result of this misrepresentation of the people has subjcted us to a government of unelected, faceless bureaucrats far more powerful than the elected representatives of the people. This bureaucratic government has created a dishonest dollar, a staggering debt, a tax system that robs the workers of their honest earnings, disrespect of government by our of own people, and the people all over the world. "The Republican party in 1952 condemned the Democrats for the.e evils and promised to correct them. The American people took the Republican at their wol-candidates to victory at them and voted the polls. Nevertheless, once in office, the Republicans i compounded every one of thtr evils that they had solemnly promised to correct. We now have government by misrepresentation, under the Republican party as well asthe Democratic party. "The records will show that the people, when given a chance to do so, will vote for that which is fundamentally right and against that which is basically I ill-wi- ar -- ' Clerk-Treasur- Cedar City Man Wins Acquittal e.
