Kirby . Mayor Steed and the Kanab City Council have asked me to wirte a series of articles about our city government. This one will ll hope) bring you up to date on our water and sewer system. Last July bond . . systems should be started. The engineers estimate that construction will require 9 months. From that you can see that the new system isnt going to be in use a great deal in our hot weather season this year. Because of this, its going to make it impossible to expand in the direction of our all ready overused small water mains. 30, you voted to the City of 'Kanab in the amount of $375,000 in revenue and general obligation bonds. The vote was nearly 3 to 1 in favor of the bonds. The city then made an application to the San Francisco office of the Housing and Home Finance Agency of our Federal Government to guarantee purchase of these bonds. The engineering firm of Coon and King from Salt Lake City was employed to draw up detailed plans for the engineering of the water and sewer system. The city clerk, Mrs. Lula Robinson, supplied facts about our taxation structure in Kanab, our tax collections, our pattern of rapid growth, and many other items that indicated our ability to pay off these bonds. These facts and figures were supplied promptly and efficiently and there was never any delay from the city. However, since August 1957, the HHFA has studied the Kanab application. In February of this year, Dr. George R. Aiken and Mayor Steed felt that action .was too slow and Senators Watkins and Bennett, and Representatives Dixon and Dawson were asked to intercede for us. At the end of March, the San Francisco office approved the Kanab application and sent it to Washington, D.C. for final approval or rejection. Thats where it is now! What Has A new well was brought in last fall, a new pump was installed, a pump house built and a 6 inch water main connected all at a cost of $24,192 and it is all paid for! You are now using water from that well. Last summer there was a maximum of 235 gallons per minute, delivered from springs and the old well into our reservoir. The new well pumps 550 gallons a minute. This is nearly 22 times as much water as last year. The 4 and 6 inch water mains in Three Lakes Canyon, where the new highway is being constructed, will be replaced with 8, 10, and 12 inch mains. The cost of installation will be paid by the State Road Commission and Kanab City will pay only the cost of the difference in size of the pipe. Bids will be let soon f5r this project and should be completed within 45 days. This installation should not interrupt our water supply. The larger lines will act as additional storage. A site north of the City limits has been approved for a booster pump station and engineering plans for its installation are nearly complete. This will more than double the present pressure in our water mains and can be installed before the larger mains are laid inside the city. Last Tuesday, Sen. Watkins was again contacted to see if he could speed up action. His telephone reply was that K would take a minimum of 3 or more weeks to process the application. Where Does That Leave Us? The new well keep eur full, but our present small water mains, cant carry more water. This will be the bottle-nec- k this summer until the new mains have been put res-ervi- or in. This means that it will be nearly June before Kanab City learns The largest water main of 12 Inch diameter will be put down First East Street from Third North to the city limits on the south. Feeder, lines will lead east and west from that main. for sure whether well get the money or not. If we get the approval another 45 or more days will be consumed in advertising for bids to construct the water and sewer system and getting government approval of the bidder. - How About The Sewer? The federal government has approved a grant of $51,000 for a sewer processing plant. The site has been selected and easements across other properties have been secured. If we are lucky, by the middle of July, work on the main May Been Done? Community A detailed map of every sewer connection has been laid out and all of the engineering is ready for advertising of bids Chairman Taylor Crosby, as soon as approval comes from Washington. from 1 Firemans meeting.
