The fatal accident happened three milesnorth of Greenes or 30 miles South of Jacob Lake on U. 89 highway. Driver of the truck belonging to the Utah - Idaho Roofing company of Riverton, Utah was Darrell Wardle 39 years old of Sandy, Utah. His companion was Rubon Dorrity 32 years old of Salt Lake City. Wardles wrist watch stopped at 8:35 p. m. which must have been the time of the accident according to Investigating Sgt. Vernon Fugatt of the Arizona Highway Patrol. The truck wasn't very easily seen from the road so it was about 11:00 p.m. before Bob Houstom, Utah Arizona driver of Flagstaff stopped to check and found the accident. Wardles brother and a companion were in another Utah - Idaho Roofing Co. truck following the victims and drove on by the accident without realizing it, they were advised of it later when they arrived at Page. They were going to Page to put a roof on one of the new buildings there which was just a oneday job, according to a statement made by Darrell Wardle at the Fredonia Checking Station. Coronor J. Downs of Page was called to the scene The bodies were taken to Flagstaff. Wardle is reported to be survived by a wife and five children, and Dorrity is survived by a wife and one child. Deserett Mortuary returned the bodies to Salt Lake City area for burial. Evidence at the scene indicated that the driver dosed at the wheel as he rounded a curve and left the road, traveling on the shoulder about 200 feet before going into the wash,. The 2V4 ton truck was loaded with crushed roofing rock in sacks and when the truck dug Into the wash bank the load shifted forward with such impact it crushed the cab flat the bodies of both men in it. They died of multiple injuries. A wrecker had to pull the wreckage apart before the bodies could be extracted from the wreckage. Heaton Rach Lynn First 1958 Meeting Board Education Held At Kanab Problems of public interest occupied the attention of the Board of Education, Kane School District, at the first meeting of 1958. The work of the general contractor, Valley gymnasium addition, was accepted. Preliminary plans were accepted for a addition to the Kanab elemenm tary school. New Board Member A matter of major importance was the seating of. Mr. Gail P. newly-electe- d Alton, Heaton, member from school representative precinct no 5. Mr. Heaton became a member of the audit and finance committee, replacing Alton R. Pugh. Otherwise Board organization remained unchanged, with Lynn F. Find-apresident and Fred E. Heaton, Members A. D. Findlay and H. Tharon Salter serve on audit and finance. Superintended Owen M. Davis and Cleric Rachel S. Findlay complete the roster. School representatives precint no 5 includes the towns of Alton and Glendale. "Until the installation of Gail P. Heaton (three-yea- r term) not since 1926. has a member of the Board of Education been a resident of the community of Alton. Mr. Heaton, a prominent livestock raiser, is a member of the Alton ward bishopric, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSaints. He and Mrs. Heaton, the former Esther Woodbury, have four children. y t. y Outgoing Member The retiring member, Alton R. Pugh, resides .with his wife, formerly Lillith Brinkerhoff, and their children in Glendale. For fifteen consecutive years he has represented his school precinct. On January 4, 1943 he was first seated as a member of the Board, and at that time was elected to membership on the finance committee. On January 7, 1947 he a position became he held until February 1956 when he again served on audit and fi. nance. Mr. Pugh had' been manager of the lunch room at Valley during W. P. A. days, and as a board member he gave much assistance to the program. He was a firm supporter of county health vice-preside- service. Serevd On Planning He assisted with the planning of a building program long before there seemed any real chance of getting new, construction. That Kane School District might qualify funds under the State Emergency School Building Program, Mr. Pugh turned his attention to the necessary bond elections and land negotiations. State funds for two new buildings in Kanab were followed by allocations to Valley for a new gymnasium and remodeling. When the allocations fell short of completing all projects, Mr, to Pugh devoted time and effort a second bond election. Funds from this second issue completed Kanab high school basement. In addition. A fine modern music, room has been constructed at has Valley; Valley gymnasium a new ceiling, the interior walls have been painted, and the heating improved. Mr. Pugh has supported more liberal contracts for teachers and higher salaries for all employees while yet insisting on service that would raise educational standards in the district. In the past our communities have done a fine job of meeting the problems of each year. Yet how many have ever stopped to consider what we should have ten years from now. Leaders of Kane County will meet Thursday night to consider these problems Represented in the meeting will be Kane County Commissioners, Mayors and Councijmen from each community, School Principals, .County School Board,of Schools, P.T.A. Presidents, Kanab, L.D.S. Stake Presidency, Bishoprics, Relief Society Presidents, and community leaders. An effort will be. made to set down the major problems facing our communities and to set up priorities on those problems. It is hoped that preliminary suggestions will also be made on how we might organize in community groups to achieve the of solving these realization problems. County officials, officers of the various unions and other Interested persons to try to amend a new state law enacted last year that places an income tax on out of state workers which according to the reports brought back from Hollywood will keep the filming companies ' from coming here, The six men above named, together with St George and Cedar City Chambers of Commerce have arranged a meeting with Gov. Clyde and the Tax Commission on Jan. 21. in the State Capitol, to try to iron out these differences on the tax. Senate President Orval Hafen, and Highway Commissioner William J. Smirl are working with the group as well as Chamber of Commerce units from other Southern Utah cities on the meeting. Orvil Mr. Russell R. Neilan, Veterans Administrative Contract Representative from the Regional Of fice in Salt Lake City, will be at the County Court House in Kanab on Wednesday from 8:00 a. m. until noon. January 22nd. Special emphasis this month will be toward assisting veterans and or widows who are in red ceipt of pensions in the completion of their income questionnaire recently mailed out by the Veterans ad ministration. These questionnaires are due back to the VA within the next two weeks. Mr. Neilan will also aid in applications for all such benefits as schooling, old soldiers pensions, all types of government .life insurance, widows pensions, and hospital and medical benefits. noservice-connecte- Kanab Conboys Win At Enterprise -- Wednesday flile 5 42 1 -- The Kanab Cowboys A team downed Enterprise 46 to 39 Wednesday night at Enterprise while the B team lost 42 to 51. Coach Adams played all players on both teams, and while the A team game was close most of the way, gave the boys good experience and managed the win. Jones who first started as a night watchman has assumed marshal duties and is on a present salary of approximately $300 per month. The Council plan on paying a substancial wage to get an experienced law officer here. Other appointments: Mrs. Lula Robinson as Clerk at $255 per month for five1 days a week from 1 to 5 p.m. each day. She also attends Council meetings. The salary for the Clerk and other paid officers was set up at the the end of 1957 for the 1958 budget. Lester Johnson, watermaster, was retained at a salary, of $400 for 4 months and $450 for 8 months. Mrs. Clara Shields, treasurer serves 2 houts a day, five days, for $55 per month. Cemetery caretaker, Douglas Young receives $1200 per year. Ken Chamberlain who has been serving as City Attorney is on a retainer of $50 per month plus traveling expenses. The Librarian Mrs. Blanche Mace receives $600 per year for part time services. Justice of peace A. T. Wakeling, asked for an assurance of a minimum of $40 per month, wdth possible additional amounts based on fees and extra duties. The Mayor and Councilmen are each paid $50 per year for their services. Firemen each receive $1 per year. Everyone voted that same day and Meryl Lee Mahoney was chosen as head cheerleader. She choose Charlotte Young and Tina Brown. They will show their pep and spirit at the game with Cedar Friday January 17,1958. On January 8 and 9 the Senior class sponsored their Talent Show. We had a good crowd and made enough profit to help out with our Senior Vocational Day. In the Senior Division the winners were Judy Lewis hula First Place, Jacqulta Watson reading Second Place, Carol Jean Jack-sand Delna Swapp Third Place with a song.
