In Kane County we don't have the large areas where alkali is a problem, but as I travel about the countv, I notice places where the plants look burned and the ground is white with soluble salts that have been left on the surface by evaporation of water. I know that some of you are. concerned about these spots, and I thought it might be well to pass on a little I recently received on the alkali problem. The first sti p in correcting an alkali soil is to provide tor drainage that will Enable die water to dram away, carrying the soluble salts with it, rather than to evaporate off the surface. If drainage isn't practical1, tlien you should consider growing alkali tolerant plants. The most alkali tolerant plant that wiU grow in this area is tall wheatgrass. If it is not allowed to get too dry, and can become established, it will stand considerable alkali. We have two good examples of what this grass will do right here in the county. Elmer Judd at Kanab and the Heaton Brothers at Alton are raising a lot of feed every year on land that they used to consider almost worthless a few years ago. Slender wheatgrass will do almost as well as tall wheatgrass and 'will stand a little more drought. Ot the crops generally grown in Kane, County, Barley is most tolerant of alkali. Sweet clover is also fairly tolerant, so If you have an alkali problem, a suggested rotation would be four to five years ot tall wheatgrass and yelow blossom sweet clover, with a year or two ot Barley, then back to grassland clover. Of course, the above is only a general recommendation. It you have an alkali problem see your boil Conservation District or your County Agent. important meeting.
