In the past. I have recommended smooth brome for the Valley and Alton, and one of the for the Kanab and Johnson. The reason I haven't recom-- , mended brome for the entire county, is because of the lack of water during the hot months at Kanab and Johnson. A recent Technical Note put out by the SCS state office describes a grass that might fit in pretty Avell In Kanab and Johnson areas. It is called Latar Ore hardgrass. This is a orchard grass that blooms and matures about ten days later than commercial orchard grass. This means that it wont be old and tough by the time the alfalfa is ready to cut like orchard grass we now use. Although it takes a little longer for seedlings of this grass to become established, both forage and seed production is high, and the grass makes good regrowth for a second and third cuttings. This grass, like so many of the grasses we. are planting today, was introduced from Russia. It was tested and improved by SCS Plant Materials Centers and more recently, State Experiment Stations and Western Grass Breeders have tested it. For use as hay, alternate row plantings are desirable, and the recommended seeding rates is about 5 pounds of Ranger or alfalfa and 4 pounds of Latar Orchard grass per acre. For pasture, reduce the alfalfa to 2 pounds per acre and increase the grass to 6 pounds per acre. A limited amount of Foundation seed will be available this year for seed production purpose. If you are interested in raising grass seed, contact myself, or one of your District Supervisors. We may be able to get a little seed for you. someone and Mrs. S. V.
