In going through them, I earhe a letter that R. II. Walker, former Director of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station had written to D. G. Anderson of the SCS. Mr. Walker was giving some information on an experimental dry farm established at Kanab in 1914. He quoted from Experiment Station Bulletin 175 and let Mr. Anderson draw his own conclusions as to the feasibility of dry farming in this area I talked to several people before I found someone who remembered the farm and that it was run by Mr. I. H. Chaimber-laiI found that the farm was on land he still owns just east of Sand Hollow, and that it was operated until 1922. The report says that wheat yielded about 12 bushels per acre in 1915, 19 in 1916, 9 in 1917, 5 in 1918, and 4 in 1919. Barley produced 12 bushels in 1915 and 14 in 1916. On the years that beans were grown, they yielded between two and three bushels per acre. They had many of the same problems that we have today. One year, the com was killed by an early frost, the rabbits got most of the crops In 1919, and the last few years, green stink bugs ruined the small grain, although no mention is made in Mr. Walkers letter, Mr. Chamberlain says that they also grew oats, sugar cane, and alfalfa. The alfalfa was a failure, but the yield of cane was good. He .also states that they summer fallowed every other year which is Important in evaluating this study. The last quotation Mr. Walker gives from the bulletin sounds like one that is heard almost n know your 57s ? Check your new-mod- below know-ho- w el with this Conoco Quiz.. . I believe that I heard him say that he served for 40 years on the water board In Valley. I havent known him very long but I certainly have leaned to respect his judgment and ideals of fairness. I do hope that so rile of you will take the time to say thank you to him. At the meeting this week the County Committee was asked to set a date for a community meeting to give the public an to get new practices written into the handbook. It was decided to hold this meeting at 10:00 a m. this coming Thursday, March 14, in Earl Spend-loveoffice. This will also be a good opportunity for many of you to learn what practices are eligible to receive government help on. I hope that a good group will attend this important meeting.
