CarmeL structure is unique in that more than 8000 lineal feet of railroad rail was driven and welded together to form a crib which was filled with 900 cybic yards of rock. This type of structure was necessary because of the unstable soil at the point of diversion, requiring a structure that would give and not break when the soil shifted and settled. The wier crest of this diversion is 70 feet wide and the water drops 13 feet, in three steps, from the top of the wier to the bottom of the apron. The cost of the structure, together with the necessary stream bank protection work was about $23,500.00. These projects were made possible, largely through the efforts of men like Mark Chamberlain, president of the Orderville Company and Lynn Tait, secretary of the Mt. Carmel Company. They left no stone unturned in their effort to get these structures built. From the Kane County Soil Conservation District they secured the services of some of the best engineers In the Service for design, plans, specifications, layout and supervision. From the Utah Water and Power Board they borrowed the money, without interest, to build the structure. The Kane County ASC committee went all out to get additional money to e up bring the Federal to about 50 per cent of the cost Even with Federal aid, the initial cost has worked a hardship on these small companies.
