Everyone is invited to display their talent and make the event a success. Participants must register by July 20 with Mildred Keller, chairman or Ida Riggs, or Hortense Gardner. Two groups will be sponsored: 1st group, 5 to 15 years of age; 2nd group, 16 to 90 years .young. Talents will include singing, dancing, poems, stories, readings, music and what have you. The more that enter, the more fun it will be, so please make plans now to enter the talent show in August. Saturday, May 30, several Kane County residents joined descendants of the Berry family in dedicating a monument to early settlers of Glendale. The monument, located about one mile south of Glendale, was constructed under the supervision of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lewis of Los Angeles, Calif. Mrs. Ray Lewis is a of John W. Berry, who with his brothers William, Robert, and Joseph came into the valley in 1862 searching for suitable rangelands for their cattle. They named the valley Berry Valley, and the place where they settled, Berryville. The monument was erected to the memory of the four Berry brothers. Joseph S., and Robert M., with Roberts wife, Isabelle Hale Berry were killed by Indians, April 2, 1866, near Short Creek, Ariz.; William Shanks Berry was shot and killed by a mob while serving on a mission for the LDS Church in Tennessee in 1884; and John William was shot by an Indian while carrying the mail for Brigham Young and carried the bullet in his wrist until his death. About 30 descendants of the Berry family were present at the dedication. The monument is constructed of white Utah marble, with a dark, glossy, obsidian trim. Bishop Jack Maxwell of the Glendale LDS Ward, conducted the services. His wife, Clara, led the singing. Mrs. Ray Lewis gave tribute to the Berry brothers, and her son, Ray Wendell Lewis, gave the dedicatory prayer. wf 41 41 Two of Kanabs very talented musicians are caught in a typical pose as they make preparations for Kanabs Centennial Pageant. Shumway, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roden Shumway of Bountiful is a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Merl Shumway of Kanab. Roger, an eighth grade student at Bountiful Junior High School, was an Eagle Scout at age 13. Member of the Order of the Arrow, he has held such offices in the Boy Scouts of America troop 218 as treasurer, assistant senior patrol leader, senior patrol leader, scribe; participated as a staff member of the Junior leadership training of the Order of the Arrow. He has earned three Individual Awards and was president of Bountiful 24th Ward Second Quorum of Deacons; was a member of the Youth Activity Council; was studentbody president of Hannah Holbrook Elementary School and was Speaker of the House. White data training call laid to rest in Fredonia Tuesday Funeral services for Chief Petty Officer LeRoy Kent Toby White were conducted Tuesday, June 2, 1970 in the Fredonia LDS Wa.d Chapel. Mr. White was born August 19, 1933 at Fredonia, to Weaver W. and Naomi Griffith White. He married Marie Joann Carroll on January 5, 1964 at Los Angeles, Calif. In 195 A local student has been accepted by SDI Business College in Durango, Colo. David Parkes, son of Rulon and Virginia Parkes of Kanab has met the stringent requirements for acceptance into the SDI Training Program. SDI provides secretarial and data processing training for peoarea. Only the ple in the best qualified applicants are allowed into the computer training program. David will begin his training, August 31, 1970. he enlisted in the U. S. he served as a ship-fittwhere Navy and deep sea diver. He completed one world tour and saw action in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He also became an instructor in aviation electronics and radar. He is survived by his widow, a daughter, April Faun, both Brookfield, 111.; brothers and sisters, Reese V., San Jose, Calif.; Raymond W., Kanab; Stanley, Jon M., Mrs. Marion Jay, all of Mesa, Ariz.; Robert, Cushing, Okla.; Mrs. Antoinette Mackelprang, Mrs. Lucy Robinson, both Fredonia; and Mrs. Carol Judd, Parker, er 1 ( .4 f ' '"'hr n Ariz. LeRoys way of life was colse nature and he loved to hunt and fish. While stationed at Key to West, Fla., he enjoyed many hours of deep sea fishing and of exploring the beauty of the under-se- a world. He had many talents and was very artistic. On December 22, 1969 a jet fighter crashed into the hanger at Miramar Naval Air Station at San Diego and LcRov was severely burned. He was hospital-ibe- d at Balboa Naval Hospital with 60 to 80 percent of his body burned and passed away there May 28, 1970. Chief Petty Officer Ralph R. Warnock, a close friend and fellow naval officer, was the naval escort accompanying the body. Funeral services were at 2 p m. under the direction of Bishop LeRoy C. Heaton and were as follows: Prelude and postlude music was played by Kezia Brooksby; opening hymn by the Singing Mothers, In The Garden; invocation by Wilford Brooksby; musical number by a group of nieces, Ill Go Where You Want Me To Go. by My Country Reading, Glennis Boardman; history, Dart Judd; vocal duet by Helen Jensen and Patsy Hatch, This Land Is Your Land; speaker, Preston Brooksby; closing hymn by the Singing Mothers, Oh My Father and the benediction was by Paul McCormick. Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased, Dennis White, Kevin White, Lonny White, Howard Dalton, Jay Mackelprang, and Donny Mackelprang, with honorary pallbearers: Brent Mackelprang, James White and Jon Ross. Flowergirls were nieces, under the direction of Dixie Judd. Interment was at the Fredonia Cemetery where a military ceremony was conducted by American Legion Post No. 69 and the grave was dedicated by Norman Board-man- . Kanab News Notes Receives SUSC award $4.00 Alga Brown attended graduation exercises, both from high school and seminary of her granddaugh-tr- , Nancy Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mac Brown of Sandy. Street of Las Vegas Funeral services held in Kanab Fri May 29 for Dealton Frost Funeral services were conducted in Kanab Friday, May 29, 1970 for Dealton Frost, 68, who died May 27 at the Kane County Hospital otnatural causes. Dee, as he was known locally, was born October 1, 1901 at Kanab to David Harrison and Annie Eve Seegmiller Frost. Married and divorced, then married again, on December 19, 1959, Nora Shumway in the Manti LDS Temple. He worked in construction and in the livestock industry. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints, being a high priest and executive secretary of the adult Aaronic Priesthood quorum of the Kanab North Ward. For several years he supervised ihe Kanab Stake cattle project. He is survived by his widow; a son, Dealton, Jr., Paso Robles, Calif.; daughters, Mrs. Mardean Church, Kanab; Mrs. Georgia Lunt, Las Vegas, Nev.; Mrs. Pauline Lunsford, Anchorage, Alaska; 8 grandchildren; 2 brothers, sisters, Allen, Salt Lake City; David H., Daniel i, S., both Kanab; Mrs. Leah Las Vegas, Nev.; Mrs. Vera Ford, Los Angeles, Calif. Fos-carin- Services under the direction of Bishop H. Bernell Lewis were held at 2 p.m. in the Kanab Stake Center and were as follows. Family prayer was offered by Grant Reason. Opening Hymn by the Singing Mothers, Oh My Father; invocation by Bp. Isaiah Meeks; Speaker, Bp. H. Bernell Lewis; Male quartet, singing I Need Thee Every Hour, Robert Glazier, Allen Williams, LeRoy Judd, and Marlin Brown. Speaker, Claud M. Pallbearers were Barry Kelly, Orvil Robinson, Jim Wilkie, Chad Cram, Joel Heaton and Dee Roun-dFlowers were handled by the North Ward Relief Society. Interment was in the Kanab City cemetery with Daniel S. Frost offering the dedicatory y. prayer. Four apparently unhurt following downing of light plane Tuesday light plane has been reported missing in the southern Utah area and Wednesday the Utah Wing of the Civil Air Patrol set up search operations in Kanab. Just at press time Wednesday it was learned that the plane had been found. It had either gone down or had been crash-lande- d near the Ryan area at the bace of the Kaibab Mountain, according to Kane County Sheriff Johnson. Two of the four passengers aboard had walked into the Ryan Ranger Station area. At the time the last report was made before press time, it was understood that the other two were all right. A helicopter was moving into that area at that time. Aboard the plane were Ten Sorenson and Jerry Glazier of Hurricane and two geologists, Grover Hienriches and Dennis Fisher of Tucson, Ariz. The Cherokee Six left Las Vegas Tusday about 12:20 and was to land in Hurricane or Kanab that afternoon, according to Johnson. When they failed to return a search was immediately organized, and Wednesday Civil Air Patrol plrnes from Utah, Arizona and Nevada were in the air. The Utah Wing had about 10 planes in the search.
