Closed Dus To Fire 374 Local Goal Mine A fire that started in the Smirl-Alto- n h coal mine near Alton, in Kane County, in May, has kept that mine from producing coal, William J. Smirl told the Southern Utah News this week. Mr; Smirl said that this is the third fire that had broken out in his mine during the many years that he has operated it but, in the other two cases he had been able to extinguish the flames. . The fire in May, however, was about halt way back in the mine in an abandoned shaft and had to much start for him when discovered. He sealed all three entries to the mine on May 25. It was thought to have started from spontaneous combustion. All equipment in the mine was moved out and saved, but Mr. Smirl said his loss was high as he had just completed a lot of new timber work in the main shaft of the mine. Mr. Smirl said that the Government will probably make a test inspection near the end of the month to see if the fire is out and if the mine is safe to work. Terry, Surgeon General of the Public Health Service, reported today that an upswing in the influenza cycle is likely to hit this country during the fall and winter. He recommended immediate vaccinations for persons in the three groups which accounted for most of the 86,000 deaths between Sept., 1957 and March 1960. These groups are: Persons with heart disease, puland monary diseases, diabetes other - chronic - illnesses, persons over 65; and pregnant women. We are probably due for some Asian flu outbreaks, since they come in 2 to 3 year cycles, Dr. Terry said, Asian flu has been dormant here since March 1960 and it has been more than six years since we had much Type B flu in this country. All persons in the risk groups should get a flu shot right now, Dr, Terry said. People who have not had any previous shots need to have a second injection in two months. He emphasized that, once flu strikes a community, it is too late to protect the high risk group. Vaccination now, ahead of the flu season, is the only safeguard. The most tragic aspect of flu, said Dr. Terry, is that it is fatal to so many people who, in spite of their age or chronic impairotherwise ments, could enjoy many more years - of relatively good health.
