Farm families who continually include safety in their plans and wank are aware of this Safe farming and living saves time, money, sound bodies, carefree hours, and even life Safety that saves makes sense. Extension workers are helping to reduce the toll of faim accidents by helping farm families to include safety in their daily work and leisure. Training in farm safety is being giv en to members in a number of their projects and program activities Woiking for safety is vitally important to these boys and girls and their families and neighbors We are proud of this woik and the saving accomplished How can w'e measure the savings of farm safety? Docs one death a year for every 1,700 farm people seem a small accident toil in your county7 Remember, that is what makes up the alarming national total of 12,000 deaths from farm accidents For every fatal farm accident there are also about 80 time-losinjunes including many cases of permanent disability. For every serious injury there are also scores of minor injuries and close calls. Exposure to hazard and haim is reduced only by planning and working for safety Our objective is to establish safety in farm living Farm safety activities aim at developing the attitudes, customs, and environment for safe living for every member of the family every day in the year. In the vital contest of Education vs. Accidents, the score should be Safety Education 100 percent, Accidents zero and family. 1 Walter Iligley and family from Alpine visited at the John S Anderson home the ast week and toured scenic pai ts of Utah and Glen Canyon Dam and icinity in Arizona Mi and Mis LUNT MOTOR Company They were Accompanied on the tour by John S. So-cie- ty hot ring helps tame an old enemy A Its one of the techniques pioneered by Standards Atomic radiation helps this man do his job. Hes Dr. Hugh Macpherson, one of Standards research engineers. The hot ring hes holding is an ordinary piston ring which has been exposed to atomic radiation. By installing such radioactive piston rings in a car, our research engineers can use a Geiger counter to measure wear as it happens while the car is driven on the highway, in traffic, on hills in every possible driving situation. This research technique has taken months off the time needed to test the effectiveness of new motor oils, and its far more accurate than previous methods. scientists to help defeat an old enemy . . . wear tolearn what it is, what causes it, how to prevent it. Our progress has been steady. Working with car manufacturers, weve virtually ended the problem of wear in automobile engines. In the 1930s, for example, cars could go only to 40 thousand miles before a major overhaul. But with todays motor oils and regular oil changes, your engine can be good for more than 100,000 miles can, in fact, outlast the car. 20 er Like New.
