A severe infestation of lice causes anemia. All this, results in a large financial loss to livestock owners. , The usual time to control lice WOW! mowd you like to liave that around the house . . . tagging about this . . . griping bout that . . -? STATE FAIR. -B- y- Rex Brown in fall or early winter. Three are used: dipping, spraying, and dusting. When the spray is used, many owners will find it profitable to spray In the fall and again in the spring. Dusting for lice is practical only when the number of animals to be treated is small, or when the weather is too cold to dip or spray. Several insecticides are effective for cqntrol of lice on beef animals. They are rotenone, rotenone plus sulfur, toxphene, methoxychlor, malathion, and lindane. When toxphene, methoxychlor, malathion, or lindane are used at the recommended strength, the residue of the spray generally remains effective long enough to kill young lice as they hatch from eggs. When rotenone is used, no such effective residue remains on the hair of the animals. Therefore, a second dipping or application of spray should be made 14 to 16 days after first treatment. Timing here is important to prevent any lice from maturing and laying eggs before the second control treatment is applied.
