G. Bsnscn j; Alpine barley has just been released. We have been awaiting the release of this new winter barley for some time. It has now been officially released by the Utah State Agricultural College Experiment Station for growing out in the state. How Alpine was developed: Dr. Rollo W. Woodward of the Division of Cereal Crops, Agricultural Research Service, USDA stationed at Logan and cooperating with the Utah Experiment Station, developed this new and superior variety of winter barley by plant breeding and selection. Here is how: Coast was crossed with Lyon to obtain Colorado 3063. This variety was crossed with Winter Club. A selection from Winter Club was crossed with Purdue 21 and a selection from this Is the new Alpine variety. Regarding the Immediate parentage, Winter Club, as you know, has produced well where winter killing did not seriously season. reduce stands. From this cross has come Alpine which, among other things, combines the winter hardiness of Purdue with the yielding ability of Winter Club. It took eleven years since the first cross was made, to complete a program of selecting and testing before this variety could be released. Alpines characteristics and adaptation: Winter hardiness Is the main thing we were trying to get into this new barley. When all the trails are averaged out It Is found to be about twice as winter hardy as the old Winter Club. However, it is considerably less winter hardy than the best winter wheat varieties. head, Alpine has a has rough awns, white kernels, stiff straw and Is resistant to most barley diseases common to this area. It is adapted for growing on both Irrigated and dry land. On good dry land, yields of 25 to 55 bushels per acre have been obtained and 75 to 120 bushels per acre on Irrigated land.
