I quit smoking for my cat. Casey adopted me seven years ago when she was nine months old, pregnant and severely malnourished. She arrived on my doorstep during a rainstorm. After devouring a plate of hastily prepared tuna, she crawled onto my lap and owned me from that moment. Up until a few weeks ago, I always felt that Casey (along with my three other cats) lived a charmed life. It was only recently that I forced myself to realize that she also lived a life filled with tons of second hand smoke. After noticing Casey sneezing frequently, I trotted her in for an exam. Its an allergy, not an infection, the vet asserted. Casey cat and it was an indoor-onl- y so it had to be wasnt Spring, something in the house. I was ready to call in an environmental engineer to find the nasty pollutant, when my vet said, Look, I dont want to insult you but I suspect its probably your smoking. What makes you think I smoke? I asked defensively. She gave me one of those Who do you think youre kidding? looks. I used to smoke, she said. Just like with people, cigarettes can irritate an animals respiratory system and lower their resistance. A couple of months later, Casey started snoring when she slept. When I placed my hands over her little ribs, I could feel a distinct vibrating wheeze. I knew it was my smoking and I told myself I had to stop. But a year and a half later, I was still puffing away. Then, a few weeks ago, annoyed by a neighbor who continually let his cat run around outside without a collar, I launched into my patented lecture on the dangers looming for I sudoutdoor cats. I realized was a that hypodenly crite with a capital H. My indoor only cat wasnt life. I may living a danger-fre- e have adored and protected her, but unlike her neighbor, Casey couldnt escape me to draw a clean, clear breath. Mid-speec- h, A human can request that you stop smoking or simply leave. But Casey never left the room while I was smoking because she didnt know I was hurting her. She wheezed, sneezed, loved and trusted me, but didnt have a clue that I was responsible for her breathing problems. So I quit smoking four weeks ago. Within three days, Casey had stopped sneezing. Within a week, she had stopped snoring and wheezing. Soon after that, my other cat Maggie, who spent the first six years of her life in the bedroom (away from the smoke) suddenly emerged to join the rest of the kitties. All this time I thought that Maggie preferred to be on her own. Little did I realize that the minute I stubbed out my last cigarette would be the moment I had yet another cat vying for lap space. Now, whenever I yearn to smoke, I grab Casey and plant some serious kisses instead. I dont think she minds the attention. And me, Ill take kitty kisses over kitty sneezes any day.
