Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY Community 101 Critical li7 days of summer Memorial Day marked the beginning of the 101 Critical Days of Summer. More people die from motor vehicle crashes and recreational activity injuries during these 101 days than any other time of the year. According to the Utah Safety Council, over the past five years, 22 people have died during the Memorial Day holiday period. The Utah Safety Council offers motorists the following safe driving traveling tips: Allow plenty of travel time, and do not speed, even ifyou are behind schedule. Chances for death or serious injury double for every 10 MPH over 50 MPH a vehicle travels. Safety belt and child safety seat use are the easiest and most effective ways to protect yourself while on the highways. Have your vehicle inspected and tuned before long trips. Keep a safe following distance, use the two to four sec- - r JUNE 11, ond rule. During bad weather, slow down, turn on your headlights and increase your following distance. To fight fatigue on longtrips, stop every 90 minutes or less to rest, eat light meals, stretch and rotate drivers. Ifyou travel alone and feel sleepy, stop and get rest. Thousands die each year as a result of driver fatigue. Do not drink and drive. If you plan on drinking alcoholic beverages, designate a driver who will not be drinking to get you home. Drive friendly and courte- s: -- ously. The Utah Safety Council encourages everyone to have a safe and fun summer and to remember that whatever the activity, protect yourself and your family by practicing safe habits.
