More than two million copies of the story were distributed in the department store, but the give-awawere halted during World War II. In 1946, the store resumed the practice, and a year later the story was put into book ys form. In 1949, western movie star Gene Autry recorded a musical version of the story, and it went immediately to the top of the Hit Parade.
