Dear Editor: After reading the report of the great success of the Beautification Committees Clean-U- p campaign, I had very mixed emotions. My residence is in the Mobile Home section of KCR, and I saw absolutely no change in the surrounding area. The residences which are always maintained in a clean and to- tally acceptable manner remained the same. The dilapidated residences, overgrown with weeds and with all of their junk cars etc, remained the same. The illegal and unkept horse barn in full view of Kanab Creek Drive remains in the same situation. Also, the Kanab City Dump located in Kanab Creek, is in a likewise condition. In the not too distant past, Mayor Adams instigated a Beautification Committee. In my 14 years of residency in Kanab, this was the first group whom I ever saw doing something progressive in the way of beautification. I was very impressed and hopeful that they would be succesful in their endeavor. It seems that the members of the City Council also were very impressed, but negatively. They saw fit, in the mayors absence, to terminate this group. And then they instigated a new Beautification Committee, to their liking. To my way of thinking, the only thing these people have done is make sure that their meetings are kept secret and not open to the public. And they have failed to inform the local community of any of their progress. It is my thinking that the only way we will ever do anything to improve the appearance of Kanab City is to elect members to the City Council who truly believe in honoring their oath of office, and have the courage to enforce the City Ordinances. Constitutional Convention. Utahs men voted to give their women the vote. Wonderful! However, I do feel obligated to say that Im glad that some other things have changed a lot since 1911. It seems to me, as I read the article, that the author was including in a list of praiseworthy council rulings two decisions taken in that year that, I think, we in 1995 would have to condemn. First, the article said: For sanitary reasons, they (the allwomen town council) had the Indians moved out of the town limits. Apart from any issues of compassion, today this would be, thankfully, seen as totally illegal. I would like to apologize to all my Native American friends for this unfeeling sentence printed in an article in our town newspaper. Second, Any dog not registered before a certain date was killed. At this time I want to take the opportunity to thank officer Cecil Campbell for the excellent job he does as Animal Control Officer for the city. Officer Campbell works very hard to either return stray dogs to their families or locate a new good home for them. The low cost spay neuter clinic at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary ($20 fee for dogs or cats) helps a lot too to cut down the unwanted pet population. And thumbs up to the women of Utah! Dear Editor: I really enjoyed the article in the September 13 paper on the town council. first With two exceptions.
