Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 7. 1994 Opinion 4 Dixie Speaks Doesn't it seem like humans are the endangered species? While we all knew that there was a real possibility that Kaibab Forest Products might have to close its Fredonia mill, most of us held out some hope it wouldn't happen. That hope was dashed last Thursday when Don Olson, president of Kaibab Forest Products, announced that the company was closing its Fredonia sawmill early in 1995. Olson said that the company had delayed the closing as long as possible, with the hope that the senseless National Forest gridlock could be reversed. But Kaibab couldn't afford to wait until someone in government came to their senses. For almost fifty years, Kaibab has been an important part of our economy and community. While Kaibab Forest Products was in business to make a profit, they were also good stewards of the land. They understood the concept that if they weren't good stewards of their resource, the resource wouldn't be there for future generations. They (under the close scrutiny of the U.S. Forest Service) mindfully harvested trees, replanted, and were active participants in maintaining the good health of the Kaibab National Forest. There are more trees out on the Kaibab now, than there were 100 years ago. 200 jobs will be lost with the closing of Kaibab, and hundreds of families affected. But it doesn't stop there. Think of the lost revenue for the schools, and lost tax base for the community when the company closes, and the workers seek employment elsewhere. Consider all the service-oriente- d businesses that will be affected when those people are no longer shopping or getting up after the dinner, who worked on posters, publicity, ticket sales, and all the other jobs that were necessary, we couldnt have done it without you. Youll never knowhow much you really were appreciated. To Mary- Glazier, who coordinated the ticket sales, Randy Stevens, who worked on getting the whole affair organized, and Leeanne Chamberlain, who took on the monumental task of decorating the gym and getting everything set up and put away, KCO thinks you are the greatest! You all deserve special their services here. Forget briefly about the dollars and cents of the Kaibab closure. Think of the havoc this will caue in the lives of all involved. Some of the affected families, have lived in this area for many generations. Now they will have to leave the only place they've ever called home. Those beautiful, contributing families who have been so much a part of the very fabric of our communities, will now no longer be able to live. here. That is simplv a tragedy of monumental proportions. It's a sad commentary when the desires of a few radical environmental groups dictate government policy, and as much as destroy ne very lif. nd heart of THANKS!!
