Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY MAY 2, 1990 Commentary 4 Editorial Start now on 1990 election decisions Its an important week for the county in this years election process, with the party caucus meetings that were held on Monday and the Republican Convention set on Friday. Wed like to see this stage of the process revised to a more open system instead of having a few delegates making the decision about who gets eliminated at the convention, but thats a statewide problem, and its been around for a long time. Well have to live with that until the entire state gets into gear and decides to change to a more democratic system of narrowing the candidate field. However, after the convention when we have the final two candidates for the Republican Party chosen (the Democrats dont have more than one candidate running for any race), we hope the democratic process will kick in, people will tune election contest. in, and well have a We will be doing our best to keep you informed of the issues and to expose the candidates and their qualifications and positions. And we hope other organizations will join the effort and sponsor candidate forums and affairs. There is no substitute for having an opportunity to meet a candidate face to face and to see him in action and on the firing line. It would be great if a hefty percentage of eligible voters decided to become active, make a concerted effort to get information and data on the races and candidates, and then turn out to vote in the primary election on Sept. 11 and the general election on Nov. 6. We have gotten off to a healthy start, with more people filing for some of the county positions than in the past. Four Republicans and one Democrat filed for each of the two County Commission seats available. Both the clerkauditor and assessor posts are being contested. School Board Precinct 4 has two candidates. Seven people filed for four seats on the hospital board. All of these people will emerge after the convention, except that the convention will narrow the commission GOP candidates from four to two. Start your election decision-makin- g by reading about the clerkauditor and assessor races in this edition. Also, the names of the 45 district delegates who will vote at Fridays convention are reported in this edition. Get involved in the 1990 election and make an informed decision. rip-roari- ng meet-the-candi-da- te Letters Heres No-GWE- N An Open Letter: We are drafting this letter to introduce you to our recently formed group called No-G.W.E.- N. Coalition. We wish to inform you about our philosophy, purpose, and intent. This group consists of people n in the from a wide a area. We care very much about the welfare of our local communities and wish to participate fully within the democratic process. We have assumed the position that each individual has a voice and it is our patriotic duty to use that voice when it is in the best interest of our communities. G.W.E.N. (Ground Wave Emergency Network) was introduced to us on April 2, 1990 by Air Force representatives. We have developed our position in regard to the nuclear communications system since that date based upon research of this project. We are philosophically opposed to any further develop cross-sectio- Kanab-Fredoni- ment of projects for the preparation for a nuclear war. Our rationaleforthis stance is clearly documented in material that the G.W.E.N. project is not a deterrent designed to prevent a nuclear war, but rather a project designed for the continuation or protraction of a nuclear war. We consider it insane to believe our families and nation would survive nuclear exchanges. The 3,000 warheads based on submarines are the deterrent. G.W.E.N. is just part of a larger system designed for the continuation of the nuclear arms race. We want Planet Earth to survive. Federal spending for a redundant nuclear system is incomprehensible within our current economic perspective. $1.4 million per tower, or a total of $60 million, should be spent on programs that improve current living conditions, not continued national deficit spending that puts us at an economic disadvantage nationally and internaa tionally. The communities, not unlike many throughout America, are struggling to develop and attract clean industry as well as sustain our Kanab-Fredoni- attractiveness to tourism and were not well then, for the rains retirement.
