Kirby Decided June SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS. Kanab, Utah Dear Editor: I call attention to the curb and gutter program. When we were first contacted about this I said I didnt need it. All I ask for was a load of gravel and finally I got one and it worked. Then came the assessment. People in our area were to pay part, to have the convenience of curb and gutter. Letters were received billing us for $3 35 per front foot. Mine totaled $254.60. Knowing we must help make our city beautiful I did not protest this figure. Finally work began. My driveway was closed for three weeks. The kind City Fathers moved my car out upon the side walk. There was room there now, and parked it in my good neighbors, so I could use the street without a gutter. Then came the big surprise. The News carried the statements for curb and gutter assessments. Mine was $533.26. I protested. Later another statement came direct from the city office listing me for $727.18. They were charging me for 92 front feet and my deeds called for 76. The honorable Mayor came and took measurements, reminded me of what a benefit this improvement was, promised to deal justly with me, made the statement that The City had no funds and sent me a statement for $631.57. That figures $3 31 per front foot. Just how benefited am I? When I back out beyond the curb and a truck is next to my driveway, where does that place me? My picture window no longer frames the majestic red hills and the beautiful green trees. I live behind a diesel wall, or a five unit cattle cortage, a home on wheels with a house or a boat behind. And dont forget the lengthy produce semis who leave their engines running and their lights flashing for hours at a time. Im literally hemmed in. If Im out Two young boys spent a long night lost on Cedar Mountain last weekend, but were found safe the next morning. Gene Ward, age 8 and Glen Ward, age 11, sons of Duane and Vicki Ward of Salt Lake City were enjoying a vacation at their grandparents cabin at the Movie Ranch on Cedar Mountain and were hiking north of that area with their older brother when it came time to head back to the cabin. The two younger boys decided they would try another way home, but didnt make it. The pair was reported missing at 5:30 p.m. June 16 and were spotted from the air the next morning at 7 a.m., and were back at the cabin by 9:45 a.m. They were found 5 x2 miles north of the cabin area. Two plans owned by the State Highway Patrol and Bob Bradshaw joined about 45 search and rescue personnel from Iron, Kane, and Garfield Counties in the search which was directed by Kane County Sheriff, Norman Swapp. The boys were unharmed, but wiser for their experience. Kanab news notes A number of visitors were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Shields, of Kanab, during the past week. They had assembled locally for the funeral of Mrs. Bergliath Fick. Included were Donna San Tesbinder, Calif.; Mickey Nelson, Diego, Cedar City; Lucy and Bob Baard-setManhattan Beach, Calif.; Seymour and Mary McAllister, Ogden; Brad McAllister, Ogden; Jane and Bob Nelson, Port Hardy, B.C., Canada; and JoAnn Brewer, New York City. h, when they park I cant get in. If Im in I cant get out. Main Street (Center) east and west has a curb and gutter, and the senior citizens and invalid husbands didnt have to pay for it either. There is a No Truck ordinance governing Parking that part of Main Street. My street is the only one in town that has such massive traffic. Everybody uses it If it isnt Main Street, what is it? Just try sitting on my front porch and count the flow up and down. Watch the teenagers race while each other dragging Main. That coupled with bicycling and motercycling and the bang and grind of the big semis changing gears or reving up as they pass is something besides regular traffic. This goes on day and night, continuously. The business units have parking areas, all but the Liquor Store, but they are not used. I wonder why? Who is it benefits from this heavy assessment on the few citizens? True, the curb and gutter (minus the light and telephone poles) lure parallel parking. Then I read in the news, how the City Budget increases expend-tiure- s for local cemetery, swimming pool, etc, etc., and a substantial savings was noted in the curb and gutter program. Where did it come from? I rebel. Sincerely, Harriet R. Judd Citizen Kanab News Notes Ted Riggs, a Kanab resident who works for the Fish and Wildlife Service, is in Las Cruces, N. Matt and some friends were playing near the irrigation ditch adjacent to Pughs Trailer Court last Wednesday Matt accidentally fell into the ditch. His friends immediately began screaming for help, but Mrs. McAllister was too far way at the home of Val Jack-soScott Willis and Randy Holt happened to be turning around in their car just at that time and hearing the children screaming, they quickly ran to the scene and pulled the young boy out before he was hurt. Matt got wet, but that was the extent of the damage.
