Show Page Two February SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF KANE COUNTY, UTAH Published every Thursday at Kanab, Utah Marlin B. Brown, Publisher and Editor Entered as second-clas- s matter October 6, 1944 at the post office in Kanab, Utah, under the Act of March 3, 1 879. Large amount of gun control bills in making says Lloyd WASHINGTON The 1972 sion of Congress is faced over 75 different bills dealing fierams and ammunition, Sherman P. Lloyd, this week. February SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS, Kanab, Utah 17, 1172 ses- with with Rep. said Although this is a great number of bills many of them are actually identical or very similar and can be boiled down to about twenty different proposals that run the gamut from complete repeal of the 1968 Gun Control Act, on one hand, to proposals requiring the registration and licensing of all firearms on the other, Lloyd said. The Utah Congressman indicated that Many of these bills will never come to the floor of either the House or the Senate, but there are several proposals that are receiving considerable attention and could conceivably be considered this year. Those favoring strict contol of firearms, including gun registration requirements, are pushing especially hard for a prohibition on handguns. Most of the pressure is coming on the Senate side with Senators Kennedy, Hart, and Bayh all having introduced bills that would prohibit most types of handguns, Lloyd said. "As a long time opponent of unnecessary control of firearms, one bill that I am anxious to have passed would exempt .22 caliber ammunition from the retail keeping requirements of the 1968 Gun Control Act. The House Ways and Means Committee approved the bill last October and it was scheduled to have come to the floor then, but sponsors of the bill delayed its consideration because they felt they lacked the necessary votes at that time. There is considerable hope that the bill can be brought to the floor this session and passed. This would remove the last keeping requirement for rifle ammunition from the 1968 act, Lloyd said. that under this Lloyd said, bill, retailers would no longer be required to record the name, address, or other information about the purchaser of any type of sporting ammunition. record-- record-- Travel to Zion decreases during January Superintendent Robert I. Kerr announced recently that travel to Zion National Park for the month of January totaled 12,633 visits, or a decrease of 5 as compared with January 1971. Campground use during Januas compared ary increased 39 with January 1971, with 411 This will relieve both the sportsman and dealers from unnecessary bureaucratic red-tap- e and the unreasonable burden created by the 1968 law. I believe that records of retail sales of .22 ammunition serve no useful purpose in reducing crime, Lloyd said. against the original gun control law and will continue to support measures that will lessen the unfair burden that has been placed on sportsmen and dealers by that law, he said. I think that the government needs to take a look at the reasonable questions that are being raised , but I dont think that we should overlook the rights of those who use firearms responsibly, Lloyd said. I voted BARKS from Barco Here we are again . . . pounding the old needle . . . trying to get out our 60 dozen so we can work 8 hours and live days a week. The Collar Section can make 60 dozen collars and set and close 60 dozen so those lucky girls are working eight hours and having Saturday off to spend all their money. Congratulations go to each girl in the Collar Section (congratulations and our envy). Elaine Bozeman and Bill Brod-wic- k left us on Friday afternoon and we sure hated to let them go back to Big Barco. We really do appreciate all the help they gave to us. ' " Mildred Morrison is once again at Barco in Station Eight and we are happy to see her there. Viv Bunting is our new Time Study and Plant Loading Clerk. She is out by our machines with her stop watch and clip board most of the day. This is a new thing here at Barco, but we all think it is going to be a real good thing for us. We have Loretta Eckersley in training. She is from Teasdale and we sure hope she will be happy here with us at Barco. Virginia Tosie left us to join her husband in Page, and we sure hated to lose her as she was one of our best zipper setters. Some of our girls have been sick and we had a hard time keeping production up without them. Betty Jo and Ardavee Henrie were away because of a death. Dawanna Tait, Corris Morgan, Nomi Johnson, Mildren Jackson, Daisy John, and Mary Jean Banks have all been sick and we really appreciate the sight of them as they return. Suzanne Barton accompanied her husband to St. George to see the doctor. If I do my share toward the 60 dozen Ive gotta sew, so till next week . . . C & L MOBILE HOMES Cedar City, Utah 596 So. Mr. Cavallo also explained the Land Rights Form. To the knowledge of the sponsors, the land rights are all secured or in the process of completion. P.A.T. Jensen reported that land estimates have all been recorded; that verbal approval from the State of Arizona has been received and that written approval is on its way; and that the BLM has given verbal approval. It was noted that an increase of $45 in the total cost of the land easements was made over the beginning figure of $1,200 which was quoted to Fredonia officials. This brings the total cost of land rights from the State of Arizona to approximately $1,300. This cost is being borne by the sponsoring groups. The Land Rights Form was accepted by all groups with no objections and they were signed. It was noted that construction could begin any time after thirty days from the signing of these forms. publIcTTotice Mrs. Nancy Foster and son visited the Clyde Youngs over the weekend. If the draweracrats (er, bureaucrats, that is) were to use some of the same spending conservation as Mrs. Nixon, maybe this long, lanky penman could afford a new suit more often than every ten years. S U- -N Have you any money in the bank? Of course. Is it very much? I dont know. I havent shaken it lately. S-- U-N of a It looks like a political year may be shaping up. What with half of the Democrats in Congress running for the office of president, and the other half running from the bill collectors from the last campapign. Add to that President Nixon running off to China with cries of stay here and when he gets there, maybe itll be stay there. And also consider that Agnew played in the Bob Hope golf classic last week and didnt bean one spectator. That ought to make some kind of political hay. Its funny when the Demos are out of office they cant find anything good about the administration on an election year, and its vice-vers- a when the GOPs out. It gets hard to believe anything they say. Then there are those like Jack Anderson to whom I listened in Salt Lake City Friday night. He couldnt abide the Nixon administration trying to suppress information, but found about the same taste for LBJ. He mentioned that LBJ wrote his memoirs from documents in the Pentagon (The Vantage Point) and received $1,200,000 for it; also that Daniel Ellsberg brought to light facts from the very same documents and he gets arrested for it. Ah, yes, politics make strange bedfellows. S-- U-N Real Etate Man: Would you like to see a model home? Client: Glad to. What time does she quit work. As a scoutmaster myself a couple of times I know somewhat of the things he has accomplished along these lines, and I also know somewhat of the joys and sorrows that go with this kind of service. Id like to pay high tribute to Dwain for the service he has given to youth, to the youth of our own area, to our communities as a federal employee, and to our communitie as a fellow citizen. Its not very many men who will continually work with scouts and help to better their lives . . . Dwain was made from a special kind of mold. Little League sets Nix- on has designated 16,303 acres of Bryce Canyon National Park as a wildernes area. Sen. Wallace F. announced toBennett, day. The Presidents proposal to create the Bryce Canyon wilderness area was contained in his 1972 Environmental Message to Congress today, the Senator said. I am pleaed that the President has included this area in his wilderness area proposal, he said. However, Utah may still have to solve the problem of water for the town of Tropic. The Senator explained that, in 1967 when this proposal was first made, the town of Tropic, expressed total opposition to the development area. The water source for Tropic is within the proposed wilderness area at that time. The designation of the area as wilderness would have prevented Tropic from laying a pipeline to its water source in Campbell Canyon, he said. Hopefully this problem has been solved, Sen. Bennett said. However, if it has not, Congress will definately have to deal with it before there can be a final bill passed. Wilderness areas which have already been proposed in Utah already include parts of Arches and Capitol Reef National spaghetti dinner Its time for another Little League Spaghetti Dinner to be served at the Orderville Ward Cultural Hall Saturday, February 19. Kane County residents will welcome the return of this fund raising activity, which has been missed for several years now. Proceeds from the dinner will be used to help buy for the Little League Ball Park, a much needed improvement. Those who have attended these dinners before know that the food, once again prepared under the direction of Joe and Marie Caruso, Colleen Ramsay, and other enthusiastic Little Leaguers, will be the best. The menu is spaghetti and meatballs, rolls, salad, punch and cupcakes. Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and price will be $1.25 per plate or $4.00 per family. link-fencin- Cabinets General Woodwork Wood Furniture GOODALL PRODUCTS Alwyn Goodail Bex 163 - Ph. 643-271- 6 Fredonia, Ariz. 86022 DR.
