Start' program Kanab news notes Recently, I received a package containing letters written by the students of Kanab High School with regard to their views on the Power Kaiparowits projected Plant. I would appreciate very much if you would take the time to express my appreciation to those students who wrote to my office expressing their individual opinions on this matter. I felt that each of your students has given serious consideration, weighing both the merit versus the danger, there is always the n danger of emotional which could lead to restrictions. When you discuss the environmental impact of such a proposed facility, the polarization of public opinion of those who would ignore the threat of pollution and those who would ban all industrial growth offers a threat to our states quality of life. All of us regardless of which side of this controversial issue we are on want a clean, healthy state. There can be no argument with that. The problem we face in Utah is to accurately determine actual environmental hazards and reach realistic solutions as to their management. In regard, however, to new industries, including this proposed power plant, they must meet the states pollution standards from the day they open. No variant will be allowed. The technique necessary to reduce pollution, both air and water, to acceptable standards must exist before construction has begun. We also must listen to the people most directly involved, those of you who choose to live in rural Utah and who would benefit most economically from its construction, but who would also suffer most from pollution of the air, water, and land in the area where you live. It is my hope that when your discussions are being made, you will keep the mater of ecological and economical bans foremost in your consideration and. conclusions. The Sierra Club has a slogan which, if observed, would well guide public attitude toward new Not industrial development: blind opposition to progress but opposition to blind progress. Again, thank you, and best wishes to the students of Kanab High School.
