Full bad test at Glen Power Plant last week A full load test conducted by the Bureau of Reclamation last week established that the Glen Canyon hydroelectric powerplant will produce 1,031,000 kilowatts at the nresent elevation of Lake Powell. This capability is 81,000 kilowatts greater than the nameplate or total rated capacity of the eight The Glen Canyon generators. powerplant is a unit of the Colorado River Storage Project. This year Lake Powell, elevation increased 20 feet over the previous maximum level and is now at elevation 3601 feet above mean sea level. Present total storage in th reservoir is 14,257,-00- 0 acre-fee- t. According to the Bureaus operation plans and aswater years, suming the Glen Canyon plant capacity will hereafter equal to exceed 000 kilowatts. Bureau officials stated that loading on the Glen Canyon plant is below the full plant capability, thereby providing a reserve power source for the areas served by the Colorado River Storage Project. near-norm- Flaming Gorge and Blue Mesa, the other two major hydroelectric powerplants of the Colorado River Sttorage Project presently is operation, also hae full rated capability with existing storage. Their capacity is 127,000 and 70,000 kilowatts, respectively. The generation of electric power by the CRSP hydroelectric plants will help meet the demand for power. Revenues from the sale of this power, which now amounts to about $25 million annually, will pay for the storage units and help pay for the participating projects, thereby contributing to a steady industrial and agricultural growth in the Upper Basin. ever-increasi- They reared two sons and one daughter to maturity. Bill Lamb, Escalante BLM Resource Area Manager, and Fred P. Howard, Kanab BLM District Manager, presented the resource information to the commissioners. A second meeting is planned by BLM for the general public sometime in early September. Howard stressed that all segments of the watersheds public land users should be represented at the future meeting. The session will be held in Escalante. The colorful Escalante Planning Unit contains over a million acres of public domain in both Kane and Garfield Counties. The scenic drainage is bounded on the east by Halls Creek, on the south by lake Powell, on the west by the Kaiparowits Plateau, and on the north bv the Dixie National Forest above Escalante and Boulder. Major land uses, according to Lamb, consist of livestock grazing under Federal permit, oil, coal, and other mineral development, and increasing public recreation, i anb further stated that protection of the environment is of prime importance in all BLM resource management programs. The planning unit has been proposed for multiple use management. The management framework plan outlines BLMs goals and programs for natural resource management upon the areas public lands. Both Howard and Lamb stated that continuous licensed user and genet al public review and comment are essential for implementation of a successful management framework plan. Factors that could alter existing resource area planning include a loss of much of the multiple use land to the proposed Moss park, cdmpletion of a projected north shore scenic highway from Bullfrog to Glen Canyon City, and continued mineral-powe- r development in southern Unit.
