Ten ytouths from Fredonia attended the LDS Youth Confer tional Historic Landmark. The boards report noted, A veteran and self frontier scientist, John Wesley Powell vas a many sided individual whose claim to enduring reputation were many. His most dramatic accomplishments were in the field of exploration: his two voyages down the Green and Colorado Rivers, sagas of courage and iron determination, which helped to fill in the last major unmapped portion of the continental United States. In Desolation Canyon the 1869 Powell expedition first ventured into the unknown area of the United States, meeting and conquering a series of natural perils tttiat assured the successful completion of the voyage. In Desolation Canyon they gave enduring name to mountains, rapids, streams, and other natural landmarks that had never before been seen by white men. Except for an occasional abandoned ranch, Desolation Canyon is virtuallly unchanged from its appearance in 1869. There are no permanent residents of the Canyon. The BLM monument at Sand Wash will include a bronze plaque identifying Desolation Canyon as a national Historic inLandmark and a 40x48-incterpretive panel, Mr. Nieslon said. The designated area extends one mile on each side of a segment of the Green River, Camprising 58,000 acres between Nine Mile Creek and Florence Creek. BIA and BLM administer most of the land on the east bands of the river, respectively. The designation will not affect other uses of the area. The unveiling June 29 at is being arranged by Bureau of Land Management personnel in cooperation with the Sierra Club, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and National Park Service. The public is invited to attend but roads to the site are unimproved, according to Rhbert D. Nielson, BLM state direcor for Utah. The Sierra Club party reenacting Powells expediton will leave Ouray June 28 and arrive at Sand Wash in time for the ceremony June 29. This is the group that left Green River, Wyoming May 24 with Martin Litton of Menlo Park, Calif., portraying Major Powell. They will arrive at Split Mountain campground in Dinosaur National Monument June 26 to participate in centennial events in the Vernal area. After leaving Green River, Wyo., Major Powells party had one of its four wooden boats wrecked in Lodore Canyon and lost many supplies. Of the nine men with Powell, one left the party at Ouray. Continuing down the Green River the group at Desolation Canyon entered into one of the last major unexplored regions in the United States.
