Highway S9A in front of PAT Jensens garage. The distance reported on the old road was 37 miles from Fredonia to the state line. The engineer's office reported that the measured distance of the new road is 32.6 miles. This dedication ceremony and program will be held on that punion of the new highway between U.S. Highway SPA and 1st West or ju'-- t south of the Fiedonia Garage. Notables from the Pureau of Land Management, L'.S. Park Service, and Bureau of Indian Affairs will participate in this dedication ceremony as well as Kanab news and current events Mr. Kenneth Bayles, son of and Mrs. Maral Bayles, and husband of Claudia Bayles is back home after serving his country in Vietnam. Mrs. Aiken picked her up in Las Vegas where they visited a sister, (Henna and husband. Willy and Margaret Koch were business and pleasure visitors in Salt Lake and Provo recently. In Provo they spent some time with Raymond Taylor. Word has been received in by Mr. and Mrs. Ha- rison Frost of the birth of a new baby girl to their son and his wife. Mr. and Mrs. Kerry Frost of Tempe, Ariz. The baby was born July 21 and weighed 9 lbs. Ka-na- 3 oz. Coconino County State Senator and Staie Governor John Williams. Alter the dedication ceremony a barbeipie dinner will be served on the high school lawn. An invitation is extended to the general pjublic to attend this dedication and ribbon-cuttinceremony, as well as the barbeque dinner. a performance. Several girls from the area enjoyed the performances this week while acting as receptionists, hostesses, and usherettes for the performances. Under the direction of Dale Clarkson of the local office of the Utah Staie University Extension Division the following Kanab girls attended and enjoyed the performance: On Friday night, July 24, Mary McAllister, Valeen Mulct, Susan McAllister, and Jane Little took over duties of receptionists. Also assisting them that night were four young lades lrom Hurricane. Then on Tuesday, the 25th, Carol Ilggs, Linda Bentley, Rosemary Kofford, Mariam McAllister, Paula Smith, Debbie Thornton, Tina Thornton, and Shirley Johnson were pivileged to attend the performance and greet guests. The girls all have enjoyed the ballet and have made the occasion more memorable to others attending. One Salt Lake lady was heard to say, We have never had a warmer, more conscientious rer. j.ion. It made the performance even more enjoyable.' To have this cultural event here in Southern Utah can mean quite a bit to t lie mummy of (he area. We hope it will lie held here again. However, this will depend upon attendance at the performances. It would lie well for local folks to take advantage of the cultural event and ut the same time support the area. After many years of hoping and wishing local lesidents will finally see the completion of a paved highway from Fmlonia through to Hurricane. The portion from Fredonia to Colorado City is finished with exception of a few small details. The Fr. donia Town Council are holding -cutting ceremonies a week from this Saturday, August 5, to officially open the new stretch of highway. They are inviting everyone in the area to the ceremonies. Also they are sixntsoring a barbeque dinntr following the ribbon-cutting- . They report that the Sunset Ranch is Quite a layout. They raise all black angus cattle at the ranch along with some very special horses. Mr. Carroll and Mr. Spencer have convinced Mr. Zcnder to exhbiit some of his choice cattle at the Kane County Fair. This will lie a sjKcial exhibit and not in competition, but should be most interesting. Livestock on the Sunset Ranch have it real tough as Spencer and Carroll report they are kept in air conditioned barns that they may retain their hair year around in order to look just right for showing. She.. plans to spend a few weeks in Kanab before assuming duties as a speech and drama teacher in Hemmett California this fall. She will teach these subjects to under achieving students. Mr. and Mrs. Julian Cowley and children Johnny and April were renewing acquaintances in town Wednesday. He was a former bank manager in Kanab. Mrs. Barbara Fox and Barbara Hamblin entertained their pinocle club by having a Mexican supper at Nedras in Fredonia then playing pinocle at Mrs. Foxes. Their son, Thomas, age 10 was injured in the mishap and was taken to the Kane County Hospital in Kanab. Two persons were killed, one serously injured and one injured only slightly Sunday afternoon just inside the east entrance of Zion National Park. Another son, John Jr., age 12, sustained minor injuries. He was treated for cuts and bruises and released from the hospital. The Neumans were residents of Columbus, Ohio. The car driven by Mr. Neuman plunged 60 feet into a canyon, according to a report from the Utah Highway Patrol. Lynn Patton Ranger at Glen Canyon New National Park Service Ranger At Glen A new National Park Servin' Ranger in the Glen Canyon Recreational Area is Ranger M. Lynn Patton. Ranger Patton has transfered down from the Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. This is his first permanent assignment since his graduation in April from Ft. Ix'wis College, Colo, lie has worked for the Park Service for five summers, earning money for . Lynn and his wife Joyce were both, born and raised in Coitez, Colo., and were married at IS. They have one child, a hoy 8 months old. They both enjoy Bonding, water and snow ing, and golf. Edward Kelly Pugh Reunion Held Members of Hu Edward Kelly Pugh family enjoyed a reunion during this week, July 23 21 at Duck Creek on the Cedar Mountain. There were alxuit 85 descendants of Edward Kelly Pugh present at the get together. There were plenty of pioneers, baton ticirlers, and several Indians on hand for Kanabs small July 21 th celebration when the primaries of the two Kanab wards held their annual Pioneer Day Parade which started at the church, went one block east and back again, stopping at the intersection for a few pioneer songs. |
