Sixteen girls from Kanab eight from Fredonia, and eight from Orderville together with eight girls each from Spring-dale- , Hurricane, and St. George have been chosen to attend the ballet performances and act in a receptionist hostess capacity to patrons of the iierformances. This activity is being spoil, ur-eby die Utah State Univeiv-tExtension Services, under the direction of lale Clarkson, Kanab. Complimentary tickets for two nights at the ballet will given to the girls and their escorts. As well as affording the girls the opportunity of good experience and cutural entertainment, it will make the ballet more enjoyable and memorable to those attending. Seminars for the girls will be conducted under the direction of Mr. Clarkson on Thursday tor the young ladies on the west of Zion and on Fhiday for those on the east side. d Not quite as well known as beautiful Lake Powell is Lees Ferry, 70 miles southeast of Kanab on Highway 89A, and only five miles down stream from Glen Canyon Dam. Trout fishing has been excellent down on the river near the Ferry. Pictured above is the old hydro plane, passenger boat used by Canyon Tours years ago when they operated down the Colorado River. Picture also shows the river at full current. Since construction of the dam, the flow of water has been cut down considerably. Camp and tourist facilities are available at the Ferry site. Siftin' 'n Observin' Columbia Pictures are planning to finish up their filming of Maekennas Gold this weekend, and for the finM few days have a real array of top movieland names here to help put the wrappings on the package. Jim Merrick, publicity director for the com pany says right now they really have an in cast assembled here in Kanab for the finale of their work here. For instance: Gregory Peck is strictly American; Omar Sharif is from Egypt; Telly Savalas is Greek; Camella Sparv is Swedish Keenan Wynn comes from Irish and Jewish stock; Julie Newmar is Swedish; and Director I.ee Thompson is English. And that is only mentioning a few of those here. Robei i Phillips who plays the part of a in Mackenna" is making a turn about from his former occupation. He is a former police vil-lia- n detective who did undercover work. He posed as a hood for the police in helping to break up criminal activities. (Maybe this role isnt so strange to him after all). His life story was recently filmed and released over TVs Tight Rope. Another copper turned actor and who is here on location is Rudy Diaz. Ruby was a detective on the Los Angeles Police Dept., and was with the narcotic bureau and later on the hono-cidsquad. He has since retired and decided to be an actor. A very interesting group of people indeed. According to Merrick the crews have been working recently at Paria, the Fish Hatchery jus! south of Hutch, and in Kanah Canyon. He stated that the set that has been built at the hatchery is beautiful and woith a drive there it sec it. e Several weeks ago Forace Green and my.se; f talked with Mi. Merrick about the movies. During our conservation he akc-- about some history of the area and historical points of interest. Mt. Green secured for him a copy of "The History of Kane County. Merrick condensed this volume CBS-Tir into five pages, as it were, stmt it to i there of this on the strength New York and Kanab in ing CBS workmen of team a picpa. now a half-houdocumentary on the area for release over that network later this year. One would think Merrick was a member of the Kanab Chamber of Commerce, from the gou publicity he is arranging for us. However, the movie Mackennas Gold will naturally be mentioned, but only as incidental. The CBS crew have been taking pictures in the area and talking with local people for several days. Ronny Saiand is the man from CBS who is in charge of the activites. V ; r Another bit of good publicity for the area we hope will lesult fix in the presence of John from Skow, writer, and Bill Bridges, photographer, the Saturday Fleming Post. Mr. Skow arrived here last Saturday and Mr. Bridges came about the same time and both ha e been busy in the area talking with local citizens and taking pictures, and traveling with the move crews. Bridges might easily pass for an actor himself. He is a short, heavy set individual and wears a large, colorful, bushy loard. ATCH FOR: In tin v. aich for" department an1 two coming events we would like to give a boost. This Saturday right and again Monday night ihe Ordei ville Ward will be presenting their historical pageant, The Land Of Our Destiny, in M . . . . the Orderville Ward Cultural Hall. This event has been described by many as very outstanding and worthy of the support of everyone. The other important event to watch for and begin preparing for is the Kane County Fair, which is scheduled for August 17, 18, and 19. Lnder the leadership of Gerald Spencer, preparations for the Fair are beginning to really hop and it looks like it will be an outstanding affair. Some have suggested to Mr. Spencer that some things be dropped from the Fair. However, ho feels it would be much better to add something more to the Pair, rather than to drop anything. The Utah Civil Ballet opens next week at Zion National Park and several sweet young dollies from the area will be there as hostesses to help make it a success and make it more memorable to attendees. For this opportunity for the young girls of the area we can thank Dale Clarkson and the Utah State University Extension Di Kanab Ladies' Literary League have donated several new books to the library recently. Names of the books are listed elsewhere in todays paper. The league should be commended for their effort to keep us, or get us well read. They are planning to give more books to the library in the future, and invite local citizens to take advantage of our outstanding literary facility. Th( Utah Cattlemen are winding up a successful summer convention in Kanab this weoit end. More than 150 persons registered for the three day conference and have been enjoying trips to scenic spots around the area as well as inspecting reseeding and water catchment projects of the F'orc st Service and Bureau of Land Man- agement. Tuesday they held business meetings and a social bom at the Legion Hut. Wednesday they toured the Kaibab Forest and Grand Canyon, and enjoyed a barbeque at Jacob Lake. One thing's for sure: I'll bet they didn't eat mutton at the barbeque. On Tlunsday they enjoyed an early breakfast at the Legion Hut, then traveled to eastern Kane County m tour several BLM projects, then on to Glen Canyon I am for a tour of that facility. It Iris been good to have these people here. We congratulate A. D. Findlay, Utah Cattlemens President and the Kane County Cattlemens Association. under the direction of Pres Swapp and Karl Jameson for bringing this convention to . our area. we're about to fill this page, but one thing more Itefore we conclude: Marshall Kelly has asked us to publish a public notice to the effect that fire chasers, will receive citations if they impede the progiess of fire fight: rs cm their way to a fire. There have been several weed files during the last few weeks, and in each case the fire department has displayed the speed with which thaw are able to take care of tlie sam. However, if they are detained along the' way. it could be disastrous. It Ik'Iioovcs each of us to stay out of the way of the firemen, and if we must go to the scene of a fire take the round about way not the road the firemen will be using. It looks like This was quite a long column this week don't know whether anyone made it to the end or no". If diey dil . . WAKE UP!! . Dunn; World War II. These books are now in the following library for your reading pleasure. More books have been ordered by the League and should be in the library soon. Sponsoring the event for all those over 70 years of age and their companions is the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. All seniors citizens are invited to the luncheon. It will be held at 12 noon in the Kanab Stake House. Filming of Maekenna's Gold." million cinerama product imi of Columbia Pictures is going strong in the Kanab area, with a completion date of this we being worked toward. The regional festival will take place a: 7:30 p.m. in the Cedar City High School Auditorium. PUBLIC NOTICE Because of the dry tion we have experienced quite a few brush and weed fires. We ask that the public please refrain from using the direct routes to these fires. All of the volunteer firemen have complained that they are being held up on the way to the fire scene and in some cases have almost collided with people who are just condi- curious. In the future citations will be issued to people who firemen on fire trucks or in their cars on the way in a ini-led- e fire. F. J.
