This distasteful condition persists despite the concerted campaigns of civic organizations, governmental agencies and many individual citizen groups. The basic reason for the problem is that many people are just thoughtless. Too many of us simply feel no personal responsibility for the appearnetance of our communities. An outwork of highways, increased travel, greater door recreational facilities, and more leisure time all combine to provide even more opportunities for the litterbug. Keep America Beautiful, Inc., the national public service organization for the prevention of litter, offers suggestions how everyone can help in the litter fight. They are: Keep your own home and property litter-freever-stretchi- e. Carry a litterbag in your car or boat. Always dispose of trash in a proper receptacle. Urge municipal officers to provide adequate collection and disposal facilities and a sufficient number of receptacles for street trash. Cooperate with others working to eliminate litter in your community. If there is no program in the area-s-tart litter-preventi- on one. Remember that litter is a costly eyesore that blights and corrodes, lowers property values, discourages tourists, and alienates potential new business and industry. Everyone should help elimi- nate litterbugging. SAFE BAOTiNG IS FUN Many accounts of boating mishaps, bath fatal and those simply resulting in inconvenience and perhaps a little property loss, attest to the fact that life saving devices are truly life saving, says the Utah Safety Council. Our accident statistics always measure failures, rather than successes, said Warren Pugh, Vice President of the Utah Safety Council. Almost invariably the accounts of boating mishaps resulting in the drowning of one or more persons indicate the absence of a life preserver either being worn or immediately accessible to the persons involved. The Council cited recent U.S. Coast Guard data which revealed that 89 percent of the 1.3G0 boating fatalities in the nations latest available records failed to use a life saving device. Many of these victims attempted to swim to shore instead of obtaining and using a device even when one was available. The Council is joining with the Utah Parks and Recreation Commission and the Coast Guard Auxiliary in promoting Boat Safety Week, following a proclamation by Governor Rampton, to urge all boaters to familiarize themselves with all safety rules and to observe them as a matter of habit. Such basic rules concern not only life preservers, but also cover fire extinguishers, ventilation, operating rules, anchoring and mooring equipment first aid kits, and water expelling devices. Good operating condition, too, Is a must. Make sure the motor is running smoothly, there are no leaks, plenty of fuel, and that the boat load is balanced and not overly burdened. Yes, safe boating is fun, and thats what recreation is for. By courteous consideration for everyone we can achieve that objective. We settled down to study area maps. After dinner we visited a coal mine, the local cemetery, then onto a lane where a herd of fat hereford cattle were being moved to fresh pasture. A pret- ty girl was helping with the drive and while talking to her we found the population of her town was less than 100. She alsj invited us to the July 4th pro gram to be held at the church next morning. At 10:30 a.m. we arrived at the chapel and when we ask, "Do you allow strangers here? a Mr. Campbell said, When you come through that pass, you are no longer a stranger. At a meeting of the Five County Organization in Cedar City last Friday night we were introduced to Leland Griffin, Tropic, commissioner of Garfield County. Following conver-raiioon several subjects he said, Well, I see you licked us." Not knowing what he was referring to I said so. He replied that he was talking about developments on Lake Powell. Still not knowing what he meant I asked him. The Governor said when he met with us while he was on tour down here that Gun Sight would come before in development on the exlake," the Commissioner plained. Being one of the moei important items that Kane County could get news about I quizzed him further. It Ls a matter of economics, he quoted the Governor as saying. The road can be put In for about two and one half million dollars, which is much less than the others, and Utah needs the gas taxes from the boats and cars. I know that this wont make me popular in Garfield County but as far as the State of Utah is concerned, the next development on the lake will be Gun Sight. Having been in news reporting all my life, it is hard for me to understand why something this important would come to the citizens of Kane County through a chance conversation. It certainly must be true. A man like Commissioner Griffin would have no reason to make it up, especially when it was the one thing he didnt want to happen. As soon as such a decision was made it would be the normal thing to have it announced by the Chairman of the Kane County Commission, or by the Governor, or by the State Road Commission. Has the Chairman of our County Commission been holding out on the people who elected him? Or hasnt the Governor told him? If tney weie leaving it up to our representative on the Stale Road Commission to help him recoup from some of the things he has done we could understand his sitting on it. If they wanted the announcement delayed certainly they would have told Commissioner Griffin along with those who were in ihe meeting with him. In any event, it is indeed good news. It will take time, of course, an will not now happen this sununer. In the meantime we could hope that the offer of the State Road Commission to furnish trucks and other equipment to gravel part of the road so that it would be made usable now will be taken advantage of. THE KANAB RAILROAD Thanks to those who took time to tell us about the railroad crossing in Kanab. U. S. Gardner, who had much to di with the erection of ihe sign, explains that it is part of a driver education course. Sponsored by the BLM, Kane County School District and others, the course is also used for testing applicants for drivers li- ment Corporation joined in ihe printing and distribution of a questionnaire asking tourists where they were from and what they would like to do in Kanab and surrounding area. Entitled Its Fun to be in Kanab, ttiquestions have been answered by many and the results received so far are very benefieal as well as interesting. While some businesses have been faithful in having (he slips filled out, of hers have done very little with them. It is important that this survey be completed to the extent that all the blanks be used. Results will be tabulated and announced next week. They show that a lot of people would like to stay over in Kanab if something were provided for them to do. - Typical is a comment from a person from New York. To the statement We could stay in Kanab an extra day if interesting activities were available the blank yes" was checked and the words several days written alongside. In the blank Other suggestions he wrote the following: five-mil- e censes. The sign was furnished by the State Road Commission. Permission for its erection was given by Kanab City. Mr. Gardner says reaction to the sign by those taking the training is as varied as are individuals. Some drive by with out seeing It. Some slow down, some stop. One individual when asked why he looked only one way when crossing the tracks said he thought it was a oneway line. RESULTS OF A SURVEY Last week the Chamber of Commerce and the Kanab Develop Your town needs more publicity had not heard of it before. It Ls one of the most beautiful places weve been to, yet it is not listed in AAA. It is definitely a place where where we could have planned on spending many days here. This individual checked no to question about a golf course, but more than half of all the slips had yes checked for this question. the Again may be urge that motels, service stations, cafes, and thers who have these slips have them filled out as soon as possible so the results can be tabulated and published. It will do mlch to guide both the Chamber of Commerce and the Kanab Development Corporation in planning their future pro- grams.
