Historic Trails Camp 12:30 News Final 5:00 CBS News (Color) 1 1 Glendale News Events - - By Don Ellison (1 IlSflL fiMUMIl ... has breakfast in bed while enjoying his Fathers Day gift , . . . a new portable Last Friday afternoon 13 scouts f Fredonia Troop 366 made a rip to Lees Ferry. They were iccompanied by scoutmasters Gene Heaton and John Cram md the purpose of the trip was to 'arn the Historic Trails Award which is a special scouting award tiven for exploring historic trails. On arriving at the Ferry, they vvere assigned a camping spot lown by the river by the park ranger and after making camp, preparing supper, and doing some fishing in the river they settled down for the night. At 7 a.m. Saturday the scouts vvere taken on a tour of the old Post Office and other buildings and the history of Lees Ferry was explained to them by chief ranger Hauffman and Ken Hansen. After touring the old buildings and learning the history of The Ferry, the scouts hiked up the old mule trail to the top of the mesa where they put their names in an old can which was deposited in a monument they built of stone. Ranger Ken Hansen accompanied the scouts on this hike and explained that this trail was built in order that mules could haul coal down to a gold mining operation in the bottom of the canyon. The scouts returned to Fredonia Saturday afternoon thoroughly exhausted from the hike and trip, but richly rewarded in their knowledge about the Lees Ferry area, and the fun they had on the trip.
