How long do you need to leave your sprinklers on to get the soil Soaked up? How much water does it take to irrigate your field? Why do crops on 'ome areas of the field grow poorly? How long should you let the war r"n to soak the lower half of the field? County Agent' Carl Hatch says that farmers can get a lot of help on these questions if they use a soil auger. Moisture condi-ion- s vary from field to field and n different areas of the same fielc. You can make a lot better use cf your irrigation water if vou know your soil moisture conditions before you irrigate, and if you check the soils during the irrigations. Plant roots extend feet and more into the soil, depending on the crop and the soil. You need to check your soil moisture frequently throughout the growing season. Usually this means checking at leaft four feet deep. If you use a soil auger, this is a relatively simple operation. You can see the soil moisture conditions and estimate water needs. In checking fields over the state, we have found that some farmers overirrigate. Others dont apply enough to fill the rootzone, particularly on the lower half of the fields. Wth prospects of greater demands on water in the future, all will need to make more efficient use of the water available. If you dont have an auger, you can borrow one from my office. I can also give you a leaflet with instructions on how to make a soil auger. 3-- 6 Goal Land Goes To Four Bidders Four successful bids were submitted today in the Utah Land Office, U. .
