Keep Kane County Clean From The Deseret News at Kanab Monday afternoon was highentire state ly beneficial, not only to Kane Couty, but to the of Utah. Its a good thing to bring vice charges out where the law enforcement officers and the citizens of a community can look at them at the same time. Such was the case at Kanab, where Deseret News Reporter Don Beck found many townspeople on hand to hear what Sheriff LaNard Johnson and other county officials had to say about the rumors and reports of gambling, prostitution and other vices in the county.' Developments were both heartening and commendable. The answers indicated Sheriff Johnson and the county commission have been fully aware of vice allegations that have grown out of the boom connected Glen Canyon Dam construction. Also commendable was a evident willingness to alter some enforcement procedures, particularly in the collection of bail on the highway for traffic violations, a practice that has brought considerable criticism. Sheriff Johnson also indicated his office will increase its enforcement activities in a effort to keep the air clear in Kane County. This could be tfe most important and benefical result of the Kanab hearing. The Glen Canyon project has opened up one of the Wests i richest, scenic areas to the world. New highways made possible through the project have made these beauties accessible to the touring public and Kane County becomes more important than ever as a port of entry into Utah. Many tourists are going to receive a first and lasting impression of the state of Utah as they come across the state line through the Kanab area. Consequently it falls on the shoulders of local officials to keep Kane County clean and rid of the element that attempts to flourish in a booming new area. IN THIS CASE the problem is enhanced by its location in an area so close to the Arizona border. But so long as the public remains alert to the situation and the sheriff and other county officials remain diligent, the air will stay clear and inviting. TIIE le Freedom cf Information Award Wednesday evening, June 17th in Colorado Springs, Colordo, the SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS and publisher Errol G. Brown received one of five awards issued for Freedom of Information among 8,000 member newspapers of the National Editorial Association. As the publisher of this newspaper, and a representative of the people of this county, state and nation, we feel that the award in this category is the very highest honor that could come in the newspaper field. In this day and age when financial returns are very often die ultimate goal of too many people, we have sustained financial loss through trying to get factual and accurate information to our readers, rather than seeking the monetary gain by not printing needed information. Today it is often the smaller newspaper who must hold back or suppress needed public information, because of pressures that can be brought to bear in a financial way. Many small and the newspapers today are operating from threat of die loss of a few Jiundred dollars often holds back much information that the public is other wise entitled to. I Other newspapers receiving the Freedom of Information were the Cookerville (Tennessee) Putnam Herald. The Parkrose (Oregon) County Enterprise. The Danielson (Connect-cut-) Windham County Transcript. The Hickman (Kentucky) Courier.
