Reclamation Bureau Receives Trim Arizoan Daily Sun, Flagstaff A preliminary victory for Flagstaff and other Arizona interests In the fight to provide air sendee to the Glen Canyon Dam project was won Wednesday. The Civil Aeronautics Board in that it will institute proceedings to consider needs of the area for air service and the applications of various air lines to provide the service. The CAB also cancelled its earlier decision to consider givCanyon ing the stop to Bonzana Airlines on its Salt Lake City to Phoenix flight The CAB release indicated it would go into the needs of air service to the Glen Canyon project in Arizona in considerable detail. The decision of the CAB was considered a definite preliminary victory for Flagstaff and other Arizona interests and a severe blow to attempts by Utah interests to divert traffic and business advantages away from Arizona, where they rightfully belong, into Utah. The CAB had previously it would hold a hearing In Kanab to consider giving a stop to Bonzana Airlines on its flight from Salt Lake City to Phoenix with stops at Provo, Cedar City, St. George. Valle Airport (Grand Canyon ) and Prescott. This route would have completely bypassed Flagstaff. Flagstaff, Phoenix, and other Arizona cities and the state's congressional delegation protested the proposed hearing. Flagstaff, other Arizona interests, the Bureau of Reclamation and the. contractors have endorsed the application of Frontier Airlines to provide service to the dam. This Would be on a flight betwen Grand Junction, Colo., where connections would be made with Salt Lake r service, and Phoenix, with stops at Moab, Utah, and Flagstaff. Utah interests, In their petitions to the CAB to give the Kanab stop to Bonzana, made to the effect that a "greater community of interest lay betwen the dam project and Salt Lake City "than in any other direction. This brought violent objections from Arizona. These objections and counter-claimwere filed with the CAB and were believed responsible, in the opinion of observers, In getting the CAB to change its actions. Expected to count heavily with the CAB in making its decision, despite the claims from Utah, are the requests of the Bureau of Reclamation and the contractors on the $421 million project. Merritt, Chapman and Scott, the prime contractor, and most of the have home offices east of Denver. They want the service proposed by Frontier as it would give them the best connections. The Engineering office of the Bureau of Reclamation is also located in Denver, as the Bureau pointed out in its endorsement of the Frontier proposal.
