MX A JOU Ksnab Route Saves Several Million Dollars Accurate figures on the cost of putting a road through Cottonwood Canyon via., Cannonville and Tropic into Panguitch, to connect with the road east of Kanab to Glen Canyon, were disclosed this week by the State Road Commission. More than THREE MILLION DOLLARS additional would be needed to construct the road as proposed by the few special interests, over the Kanab route. This would be for the route south of Cannonville, and to improve the present gravel road from Tropic to Cannonville. It does not take into consideration the new road that would be needed at the Junction south of Panguitch to Tropic. Several more million dollars would be required to complete this road for heavy travel. True Highway 89 from Panguitch south to Kanab, and north to Richfield, is going to require a lot new construction. In any event tins would be needed. This important road to Zion Canof yon and the North Rim of Grand Canyon carries a big part all of to is so important the tourist and trucking travel that Arizona - which inand Northern of Utah Sate the Utah, cludes Panguitch and Richfield, as well. The towns of Tropic, Cannonville, Escalante and Boulder, need better roads. There is no question on this, and these folks in this area that have been workings for this route cannot be ignored. This writer and most of Southern Utah would like to see good roads through this area. A good road to Boulder and on to the lake which will be formed by Glen Canyon is a must, as soon as Utah has a good road to accommodate the present and future building that is to go into the Glen Canyon Dam Project. But for a few personal interests, and Two Mayors, to try to promote a road through Cottonwood Canyon,, to benefit a few individuals cost other areas millions of dollars in present investments, should not be forgotten! The State of Utah has been done an injustice by these few men during the past few months, in delaying this much needed road out of Kanab. This road, a few miles longer, is definitely a better route for trucking with less grades and fewer curves to contend with. Both the Richfield and Panguitch newspapers have let their respective Mayors influence their thinking, and we feel, have done their communities an injustice by unfair reporting of the true facts. We believe that tin's will be shown up in future patronage from residents in this area who have in the past supported these two communities by shopping and spending money in their various business houses. We hear rumblings of these few personal interests supporting this road down Cottonwood Canyon, to the effect that they plan on working on members of the State Legislature. A watchful eye will be observing these future happenings, and if the respective few. individuals persist in this needless pressure, we intend to report any and all facts during the coming months. Cooperative action by all residents from Salt Lake City south should be concentrated on improving Highway 89, and putting this road into top shape to carry not only the truck traffic from the north, but the heavy tourist and commercial travel that is the very life line of many communities in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. A District Engineer II. L. Hutchinson has indicated a strong desire to see work started immediately on improving Highway 89, and the cooperation of all communities along this route are needed. Richfield, Panguitch and all other towns along this route will benefit if this road is improved - - it must be improved to benefit anyone expecting to see heavy truck traffic, and passenger car travel continue using this road. We believe that when the time comes for a good road through eastern Garfield County to to the Glen Canyon Lake comes, this area will support and back such a project. Ive often noticed that my speeches are moving, soothing and satisfying. I know they're movihg because half the audience leaves; I know theyre soothing because the other half goes to sleep; and they must be satisfying because they never ask me to speak again. Anyway, I told them about a proposed proclub members gram for who are 14 and over. We would like to start this program this winter holding one meeting a month and offering projects in leadership, recreation, etc. It was suggested that we offer a project in driver training and if this is possible it will be offered. We are checking on it at the present time. I was out to Guy Chamberlains Dairy last week and he sure has the place looking nice.
