Voltaire Weekly Ihrcs Reieaso from your County Agent Soil Conservation Weekly tlsvss Holes By EARL 8PENDLOVE ago, I went to Alton to help Gail Heaton plant about ten acres af an improved .strain of Intermediate Whcatgrass. The seed for this planting was furnished the Heaton Brothers by the Kane County Soil Conservation District, with the. understanding that it would be planted for seed production and that they would pay the District twice the amount of seed they got, out of the first By D. WAYNE ROSE A couple of weeks seed crop. When I got to Alton, I found Gall and Ross working on a drill that they are fixing to plant grass to their specifications. In the past, they have found that they have got more grass In the deeper furrows, because they held the moisture longer. The t drills that they have used made the size furrows they like, so they decided to make one that would. So far, their Invention looks pretty good. The two outside drops, and the two drops In the center have been left on the drill. Each pair of drops have been bolted together , and a shoe, or welded on Just in front of the discs. These shoes makes three good furrows about 30 Inches apart. The discs, which are right behind the shoes, are set to widen the furrows by throwing the dirt out a little farther. The seed Is dropped behind the discs, on each side of the furrow. Except for the fact that the seed was planted a little too deep, the drill worked very well. We spent all afternoon trying to figure a way to get the seed nearer the surface, and finally took the discs off altogether. I am sure that with a little more experience, the Heatons will be able to adjust the drill so It will plant Just the way It should. Speaking of grass seeding, from all appearances, the new Soil Bank is going to do more to get grass seeding started In this country than all the talking wo have done in the last 15 or 20 years. If you have Dryland, you should look Into it There is a chance that the Government will pay you 80 percent of the cost of the seed and between ten and twelve dollars an acre per year for five years to stay off It after seeding. hav-en- furrow-opener- , .... A major problem facing agriculture In America today is the one of surpluses. These surpluses, especially in the so called six basic crops of wheat corn, cotton, peanuts, rice and tobacco are overhanging the market and depressing prices. In order to reduce these surpluses, the government has developed the Soil Bank Program. The Soil Bank has two parts, the acreage reserve and the conservation reserve. The acreage reserve is a short term program. It Is designed to cut surpluses of basic 'crops and still protect the farm Income by paying for crops that would have been produced on the acres entering ,the program. The conservation reserve is a long term program to divert land that is regularly used In crop production to conservation uses by establishing conservation practices and by the government making annual payments for land placed in this program. Land placed In the conservation reserve must be Jteft there for three years If -' cover is already on the land and for 5 or 10 years If a cover must be established.
