Show ESSENTIALS OF PLANT PEST 'Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium Are Most Important. Plowing Under of Green Ma'prtrj terial In Orchard Interferes Greatly With Flret Irrigation Two Beat Shade Crops. By It There S. HERRICK, Colorado Experiment Station.) are thirty-eigh- t - different chemical elements which ore used to make up the growth of a plant The following nine are very essential for 'the proper development of the orchard plant: Carbon, hydrogen, oxy- gen, nitrogen, sulphur, phosphate, potassium, calcium and Iron. The three most Important of these, and which - are sometimes absent In available form, are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. A certain amount of nitrogen :ls required for the vigorous growth of the plant and Is used principally In the formation of the woody part of the plant Phosphorus Is not as essential In fruit growing as it Is in the growing of grains, as it Is used to make up a large per cent, of the seed, but is, however, essential to aid the proper ripening of the fruit Potassium aids In the proper coloring of the fruit and goes to make up a large per cent of the ash of both the fruit and of the fruit wood. Many of our orchard soils are rich chemically in nitrogen, phospborus and potassium, but oftentimes these dements are not available for the plant on account of the poor physical condition of the soil; we mean that It lacks humus. By humus we fnaaa the complete decay of organic tnatter which can be obtained by the plowing under of some green manure crop, such as alfalfa, clover, vetch, oats, rye, etc. In the east where experiments have been run with clean cultivation versus sod for orchard soils, the results were found to be In favor of the clean cultivation. Clean cultivation versus a rotational shade crop has been tried in Colorado and the results were in favor of the shade crop rotation. In the east, cover crops are used, which means the sowing of the seed in late summer and the plowing under of the green manure crop the next spring or In the Our conditions are early summer. such that this method does not work well, the greatest trouble being that the spring plowing under of a great mass of green material interferes great-M- y with the first summer irrigation, as t sometimes causes the soil to puddle and thereby causing the lesves to turn yellow. By shade crops Is meant the sowing of the seed in the spring of the year, thus shading the soil during the summer from the sun, .and the plowing under of the green crop either the following fall or the next fall, depending on whether an annual, biennial or perennial crop Is grown. Nearly all of the Colorado orchard soils are very poor in humus content nnd this is the principal reason why they are so poor physically, fbat Is, they are hard to work' when It comes to irrigation and cultivation. Such soils do not take water readily nor do they hold it after they have been Irrigated. Humus in the soli will do away to a large extent with these troubles and can be obtained by the plowing under of barnyard manure, but cm account of the scarcity of It. the orchardlsts will have to rely to a great extent on the growing and the plowing under of a shade crop. Shade crops are divided into two classes, vis. leguminous and The legumes are plants like alfalfa, clovers, etc.; the are the grains, like oats. rye. barley, etc. For orchard soils which possess-hard under soil there is no plant This is not hard to like alfalfa. handle if it Is not allowed to go to seed and Is plowed under in the fall of the second year. It is well to sow bushel to the oats, about one-haacre, with the alfalfa for a nurse crop. The oats should be cut before they go to seed and tbey can be harvested for feed. Alfalfa can be sown later than clover with good results, but, as a rule, It is better to sow all shade crops in the orchard as early in the spring as possible. Mammoth red clover makes a very good orchard shade crop, but sometimes it Is hard to get the clover to grow well at first unless it has the proper amount of moisture. This Is one reason why clover is not always a success In peach orchards. as sometimes the clover requires more water than is good for the peach trees. In growing anything in the orchard, one must remember that the trees are the first consideration and the crop of second Importance. For this reason do not overirrigate the trees In order to get a good stand or clover, etc. lf The Guanaco. The ranchmen in Texas nre said to be studying the guanaco as a ranch animal, (luanacos are found In Central Peru and thence south to Pape Horn. They are about the weight of n sheep, but taller. They feed on bitter desert herbage nnd run exist where the water is salty. They rurnlsh meat and elothing to the South Americans. Guanaco rugs are worth from $16 to $25 each, where manufactured. IN IRRIGATED COUNTRY PUBLISHER Prof. Osborne of Idaho Station Offers Suggestion to Completely Eradicate Wild Oat E.NTEKIIUSE: COUNTY Enclosed find for payment $ for fRENENVUL OR NEW) sub crlption to (he COUNTY ENTERPRISE. One of our most pernicious pests hs Irrigated sections is the wild oat. O. M. Osborne of the Idaho station offers a good suggestion when he says that the only course to pursue to completely eradicate the wild oat is to proceed to bring every seed in the soil into germination as rapidly as possible and then destroy the seedlings as soon as they appear. Hence, plow the field shallow or disk s soon as the grain crop Is removed. In about ten days, If the weather has been warm and damp, uee the disk again, then harrow every few days as the little seedIf the autumn la dry lings appear. and the seeds do not germinate readily it Is well to roll the soil to bring up the water from below. Continue the process of harrowing as long as possible before the winter plowing, then plow the usual depth for winter. Get onto the laud early In the spring as soon as the soil will permit and harrow again to kill the seedlings. Follow with a cultivated crop such as beets, corn, potatoes, beans or cabbages. In case the land is too dry to plow Immediately after removing a grain crop turn cattle or sheep into the field in order to eat down the seedlings. Otherwise many of the oats will go to seed before winter sets in. Bummer fallowing as practiced In many sections is an excellent method of holding the wild oat In check, particularly If cattle are allowed In the field once on a while to nip off the plants missed by the plow or harrow and to eat off the seedlings. Early winter rye or barley Is an excellent crop to raise if the farmer does not wish to resort to a cultivated crop. As a rule this can be cut before the wild oati ripen.
