Show PABE TWO SUGAR EDUSE,UTAH THDRSDAX JUNE 25 1959 INDEPENDENT MERLE RICHE Now that the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Utah has inter- -, preted the statement in the Dec-laration of Indep- - endence, all men are created equal' to mean racial social equality, it might be appropriate to j set forth the true i doctrine of the I Catholic Church I in this regard. It is found in the Encyclical 'TDivini Redemptoris," of Pius Xlth, dated March 1937. He explictly defines what basic human rights are. "Man has been endowed with many and varied prerogatives : the right to life, to bodily integrity, .to the necessary means of exis-tence: the right to tend toward his ultimate goal in the path marked out for him by God; the right of as-sociation: and the right to possess and use property." "Now, it so happens that the Catholic Church has never taught" that, in addition to the above bas-ic human rights granted to them by God, all men are intended to be absolutely equal in every respect, too: e. p-- . pnHCflHyr cna1fY eq onomically, etc. In fact, such a doctrine is the heresy of "equal -- itarianism" which doctrine has actually hn rnndemned by the Catholic Church as being contrary to the laws of human nature. reason, and God's revelaon. Equality-lik- e liberty, freedom, democracy, and other popular modern catchwords --is an ambig-ou- s word, and means nothing un--le- ss we clearly understand which of the two opposite concepts o 'equality the Catholic theolog- - . ician's or the Communist dial-prtjqia- n's - we are referring to... At is not true that all have eau31 rights in ciYil society...." What a travesty of justice that the Chief Justice of the Utah Sup-reme Court should so twist the in-tent of the founding fathers of the country that he interprets the phrase "all men are crated equal" to uphold the communist dialect-ician viewpoint. The automobile is no respector of persons. Yes, we all know its terrible toll on our streets and highways, but do we realize that the nation's waterways lakes, streams, ocean resorts have be-come almost as congested by boats? So this Fourth of July remem-ber on the highway on the water or handling ' fireworks nly you can light the fuse. Only You Can Light The Fuse The day of the big BANG! is over or Is it? Remember the old fashioned Fourth of July with its giant can-non crackers and other assorted pieces of artillery that left a wake of blinded eyes, mangled hands, and death? The fireworks manufacturers, legislative bodies and other com-munity groups long ago saw their civic duty and limited sale of fire--crack- ers in the interests of a 'safe and sane" Fourth. True, you can still buy bootleg firecrackers, but nobody tells you to buy them and only you can light the fuse! "Let's not have our coming July 4 holiday a repetition of the recent disastrous Memorial Day week-en- d when 297 lost their lives in a carnage surpassing the Nat-ional Safety Concil's prediction of 260 deaths for the 54-ho- ur per-iod," said Richard M. Pittenger, vice president of public relations of Farmers Insurance Group. "Our department deals with facts and figures on accidents every day. We see the results." Mr. Smethills said that com-panies interested in listing their qualifications should apply to the Agency's Regional Office for Form 449. In order to be listed in the revised issue, he said, the company should fise the completed form by July 17, 1959. The new list will contain only the names of small firms. SBA generally classifies a firm as small for Government proc-urement purposes when it is not dominant in its field of operation, and with its affiliates employs fewer than 500 persons, or is cer-tified as a small concern by the SBA. The new directory will include information about each firm's field of interest, area of specialization, previous experience in research and development and technical ser-vices, availability of laboratory and testing equipment, and prod-uction equipment and the number of scientists, engineers, and tech-nical employees of each company. The directory will be made available to all Government pur-chasing agencies and private groups engaged in research and development. Instructions For Small Business Available All small fir ins interested in obtaining Government research and development prime or subcon-tracts were invited by the Small Business Administration today to register their qualifications with this Agency by July 17, 1959. Mr. Harold R. Smethills, Reg-ional Director of the Small Bus-iness Administration for this area : said small firms that believe they are qualified will be made avail-able to Government puchasing off-ices and prime contractors. A list of 1,400 companies was issued by the Small Business Ad-ministration in December 1958. Today's announcement said this listing is now being revised and that applications for the new dir-ectory may be obtained at the Small Business Administration Regional Office, 206 Railway Exchange Building, 909 Seventeenth Street, Denver, Colorado. , Mrs. R. Too Important For United Fund Heart disease is "too serious a problem to hide in a segment of a United Fund," Dr. Paul Dud-ley White declared in a statement released through Dr. Merril C. Daines, President of the Utah Heart Association. Calling it "the modern American Epidemic," Dr. White declared that submerging the problems of heart disease in local community chests or united funds would "seriously delay our effective progress in the treatment and control of this dangerous threat to our lives and health." The eminent Boston cardiolo-gist spoke out in reply to efforts being made to force various maj-or national voluntary health agencies to join local feder-ated fund-raisi- ng drives. He said he was "impelled by the critical need of clear thinking and im-partial scrutiny of the health of this country today" to present his experience and advice on this pro-blem. Dr. White said, "Meanwhile I see no reason why the national voluntary health agencies should not continue to operate independ-ently with due recognition to their significant and necessary roles in community and natianal welfare. Many of us have for years sup-ported annually both United and Community Fund drives and in-dependent campaings in whatever important worthy causes we feel a special interest or obligation. , Surely this is the right of the free people of this country."
