Show Page 2 SOUTH EAST INDEPENDENT Sugar House, Utah Thursday, July 11, 1957 AVKEKLYWtURE OflHlsSmmT THEATRE IN SUGARHOUSE (the sweetest spot In town) i ! V ' i Taking a ride in the world-famou- s "surrey with the fringe on top" are Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones in this romantic scene from Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Oklahoma!" opening Sunday at the South East Theatre. In CinemaScope and color by Technicolor, the Magna Production is being distributed by Twentieth Century-Fo- x at regular prices. The filmization of Rodgers and Hammerstein's immortal musical classic "Oklahoma!", originally presented on a roadshow, two-a-da- y basis, will begin its continu-ous performance, popular - price run in CinemaScope and color by Technicolor beginning Sunday at the South East Theatre. The Magna Production, distribut-ed by Twentieth Century -- Fox, presents some of the most excit-ing" music ever written for a musi-cal comedy and features an all-st- ar cast headed by Gordon Mac- Rae, Gloria Grahame, Shirley Jones, Gene Nelson, Charlotte Greenwood, Eddie Albert, James Whitmore, Rod Steiger and a host of other stars. As "Curley" and Laurey," Gor-don MacRae and Shirley Jones re-create probably the two most fa-mous names in musical comedy history. The same two, it will be remembered, also starred in the CinemaScope 55 version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel" earlier this year. "Oklahoma!" is an adaptation of the drama "Green Grow the Lilacs" by Lynn Riggs, and is set in the period immediately preced-ing that state's admittance to the Union. The story is a simple one; that of "Curley" and "Jud," the latter played by Rod Steiger, and their mutual love for "Laurey." However, it is the lilting music and the outdoor touch which has made "Oklahoma!" a byword in stage, and now screen blassics. Most of the rich Rodgers and Hammerstein music, which helped "Oklahoma!" to achieve a stage run in New York from March 1943 to May 1948, is contained in the picture version. These numbers in-clude such all-ti- favorites as "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top," "Kansas City," "Many a New Day," "People Will Say We're in Love," the title song, "Oklahoma!" and many, many others. Filmed in Mexico, the new pic- ture introduces as its star a film prodigy, Michel Ray, said to be one of Hollywood's most interesting "discoveries" since the era of the two famous Jackie?, Coogan and Cooper. Yourg Ray will appear in the role of a Mexican country boy, central character of the Robert Rich story. Drama deals with the youngster's love for a pet bull, his constant companion from birth until tagged for mortal combat in Mexico's City's Plaza de Mexico bullfight arena. Screen play by Harry Franklin and Merrill G. White is said to have captured the true emotional essence of the situation as the boy gradually becomes aware of the animal's plight and struggles to delay and perhaps circumvent the hour of doom. "The Brave One" was awarded an Oscar for the best story of the year.
