Show I INDEPENDENT .. ... SUGAR HOUSE, UTAH THURSDAY DECEMBER 10, 1959 PAGE THREE decorations were admired by everyone who saw them. "Though little known, this story is true," Mr. Richmond said. The invent-tiv- e man was Ralph E. Morris of the New England Telephone Company, an affiliate of the Bell System. Tree Lights Invented It was a safety -- minded telephone man who first pushed in the plug and made a Christmas tree light up electrically with a warm glow of happiness and peace, according to H. K. Richmond, District Manager of the Mountain States Telephone Company. Here is now it happened: Years ago, many families used, wax candles to decorate their Yule-tid- e evergreens. The burning tapers cast a beautiful--b- ut dangerous-glo- w among the tinder-dr- y needles. The search for a safer substitute began when a little boy crawled under his Christmas tree and up-set a candle. Luckily it only singed his hair. Still, his father, a telephone technician, at once decreed: "Candles have got to go." Being accustomed to working with low voltages and small lamps used on switchboards, the father was able to prepare the first string of electric lighted Christ-mas decorations. He soldered wires to a dozen telephone switch-boards lamps and then covered them with colored paper. The new Lt. Barbara Kerr Completes Course FORT SAM HOUSTON, TEX. First Lt. Barbara J.
