Nearly 450 Dads and toys, all ages took advantage of the outing to eat, hike and fish and participate in games and have fun. The happy faces of the sons and dads was real tonic just to watch them. Burgers, salad, and cooling drinks were on the menu. The aroma of cooking food was evidence enough to bring the kids and dads from all parts of the canyon to eat. the stake committee and cooks were plenty busy for atout two hours feeding the hungry animals. By previous arrangement each ward chose to have their own program camp, some had organized for the evening, others didn't do so well. From past experience an organized program on a stake level where all the wards meet together has been a choice experience of spiritual uplift for dads and their sons. Rangers. Gray of Wells Ward for his outstanding teaching job. His recent subject has been on the Dead Sea Scrolls and it is very fascinating. Anyone desiring to come to these groups may do so. Weds Cut Cake LAFAYETTE LEE CELEBRATES 75th BIRTHDAY This week we extend our sincere Congratulations to Lafayette C. Lee of 129 West 3440 South on his 75th borthday. Mr. Lee has been a resident of this area since 1937. Almost Immediately he took part in civic and community af- fairs. When the Granite Park Civic League was organized he was Vice Western stories, or show wildlife films and provide instructions for individual and group survival in wilderness and mountain areas. Boys G to 10 years were allowed to chase the greasy pig. every boy had a chance and the pig was finally caught by Brother Harold Cropjers grandson. Twenty-Eighhanty chickens were turned loose among the various age youngsters and a real race for possession ensued, each toy that caught a chicken kept it. Mrs. Cook is the former Camille Lloyd - daughter of Mrs. Lamond Lloyd, 41(5 East Burton Ave. Mr. Ed Cook is the son of Mrs. Orie Cook, Bluebell, Utah. They were married Friday, the first day of A beautiful August. reception was held at the Garden Park Ward. 1150 Yale Avenue. Salt Lake City, with a program at nine that evening. The young couple are living in South Salt Lake at 410 East Burton Ave. er conserverary district. He was also a charter member of Granite Park Lion's Club. Mr. Lee was born in St. George, Utah on July 31, 1894. He moved to Hinckley, Utah June 1908 with his mother and sister E. Nielson. He was studentbody president and graduated from Millard Academy Former Resident Heads Chemistry Department Former Salt Lake resident, Dr. Garth L. Lee, son of L. C. Lee, was appointed official head of the chemistry Department at Utah State University in May 19G9. Dr. Lee graduated from Jordan High School. Received his A.B. and M.A. Degree at University of Utah. Obtained PHD at Toronto University. He taught chemistry five years at University of Colorado and fifteen years at Utah State. His wife Lila Henry Lee is a graduate of the University of Utah. They are the parents of nine living children. ( one deceased) Three sons have served on missions for the LDS Church. Germany, California and Eastern States Spanish Mission. A young son will leave shorty for the Okinawa Japanese mission. Dr. Lee is presently serving as Bishop of the Hyrum First Ward, which position he has held for nine years. Their son Harold is an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Utah. When I success turns a man's head, he faces failure. in 1915. He married Pearl Mort-ensin 1915 and shortly after were called to fill a mission they en to Japan where they served for four years. Their first two children Marvin and Milton were torn in Japan during this period. Prior to and following his mission he served as ward clerk, member of Deseret Stake High Council and 2nd Councilor in stake residency until 1935. In 1935 with his family he moved to Sandy, Utah. Two years later they moved to the South Salt Lake Ara where he served as group leader of Miller Ward High Priest and Grant Stake genealogical representative. He later served eight years in South Salt Lake High Council. He was ordained a patriarch in September 1949 which position he now holds in the Granite Park Stake and is serving as an offlciator in the Salt Lake Temple. During this period two more sons Garth and Evan and one daughter Ruth were added to the family circle. All four sons served their country in World War II. Their son, Milton lost his life in the battle of the Philippines. Daughter Ruth married a former missionary Richard W. Madsen III of Salt Lake City. Pearl Mortensen Lee, first wife died in 1959. The present Mrs. L ee is the former Lillian Burton of Salt Lake. His large posterity is represented by his four living children and Miltons children. Thirty one grandchildren, six great grandchildren. Fifteen have members of this family served or are serving in the mission field. Andresen, 40 -- 9th East, president of the Norwegian Mission of the Church of Jesus Crhist of Latter-da- y Saints from 1952-19died in a Salt Lake hospital of a heart ailment. He was 73. Andresen was bishop of Burton Ward until called as South Salt Lake Stake president, a iosltion he held from 2. He filled a Church mission to the Eastern States from 2, and was a temple sealer at the time of his death. Andresen was the retired assistant general manager of Deseret Book Store ad a member of the Salt Lake Lions Club. One of Utah's foremost ski jumpers, Andresen was an initiator and promoter of the 56 1941-195- 1920-192- Utah Ski Club. was torn July. 1 1896, in Trondhjem, Norway, a son og Gerhard He married Sigrid Hyrum and Julie Blrgitte Nllsen Andresen. in the Salt Lake Temple. His survivors include his widow; a son and daughter, Bruce R. Sunnyvale, N.J., and Mrs. Clifton (Mildred) Hedgepeth, Salt Lake City; a sister and brother, Mrs. L. W. (Valtorg) Johnson, Salt Lake City; Nephi, Los Angeles, Calif; twro nieces who made their home with him, Ann Marie and Vlgdis Toft, both Los Angeles. He M. EDITORIAL Axel J. Andresen, first president of the South Salt Lake Stake of the L.D.S. Church will not soon be forgotten by many of the residents of the South Salt Lake. His very friendly, dynamic personality had a tremendous impact upon the community and the membership of the church. Under the direction of the new stake presidency, Andresen, S. Ross Fox and Hubert Record made significant progress that carried over into the leadership of the atake as new leadership was chosen. During his tenure of office the annual Aaronic Priesthood award program was initiated and continued very successful under the directionof Leonard Aamodt and other leaders in the priesthood. The L.D.S. Girls program was organized with marked success for two years before the girls activi ties came under the direction of the Y.W.M.LA. He also, lent effective support to the Law Observance and enforcement committee of the stakes of Salt Lake County that assisted law enforce mtn agencies of the cities and counties to more adequately control crime and minor law violations. During these early years he and his lovely wifeAstaAndresenw'ere and an significant Integral influcence for good in the life of th City of South Salt Lake. When his wife Asta passed away he and his children Mildred and Bruce shared the home responsibilities that kept the home fires burning bright. At a later date he married another lovely lady, Sigrid Hyrum, who served a very successful mission with him in Norway, and who survives him.. K |
