Bennett, who attended the ConI am gratified the vention, said, Platform Committee and delegates themselves agreed to the importance of this measure to assure Federal employees the right to choose freely whether or not to join a labor union. There are powerful interests in Washington including no less than President Johnson and Vice President Humphrey themselves who have been working toward the goal of forcing Federal employees eith to join the union where they work or pay the equivalent of union dues. Sen. Bennett continued, I am not opposed to an employee joining a union, and believe this is an important right for all Americans. However, I believe equally that no person should be forced by the government or private industry to join a union in order to retain his job. The Utahn explained, Fortunately, the Admission .was deterred this year from passing an Executive Order forcing Federal employees into unions. However, the possibility still exists that some other President will attempt such coercive action in the future. Our bill, as well as the GOP Platform language, is intended to prevent such a possibility. The entire platform paratraph incorporating the Bennett language follows, under the heading The Individual and Government: We will prevent the solicitation of Federal workers for political contributions and assure comparability of Federal salaries with private enterprise pay. The increasing Government intrusion into the privacy of its employees and of the citizen in general is intolerable. All such snooping, meddling, and pressure by the Federal Government on its employees and other citizens will be stopped and such employees, whether or not union members, will be provided a prompt and fair method of settling their grievances. Further, we pledge to protect Federal employees in the exercise of their right freely and without fear of penalty or reprisal to form, join, or assist any employee organization or to refrain from any such coast-to-coa- city-by-ci- ty i I . |
