State Democratic Committee Apparently the Nixon Administrattion has made all the promises necessary to lure Mr. Burton away from his supposedly safe seat in the House of Representatives and into the campaign for the U.S. Senate seat held by Senator Frank E. Moss. By making his announcement to seek election to the Senate, Mr. Burton has thrown away eight years of Utah seniority in the House. By asking the citizens of Utah to defeat Senator Moss, he will be asking them to throw away 12 more valuable years of Utah seniority in the Senate. He underestimates the political savy of the Utah voters who know that seniority, especially for a small state, can be Utahs best friend in Congress when used as effectively as Senator Moss uses it. Utahns also know that Mr. Burtons decision to run came after receiving pressure from Mr. Nixon. Last August, Mr. Burton told a Utah reporter, It will take $250,000 to run against Moss. When I get $250,000, Ill announce. (Moab August 7, 1969.) The citizens of Utah deserve to know where the $250,000 came from. I think they will resist attempts by the White House to buy Utahs Senate seat. It belongs to the voters of Utah, not to Mr. Nixon and it is not for sale. I hope Mr. Buton continues to insult the intelligence of the Utah voters by repea tedy telling them how little campaign money he has compared to what the Democrats will spend. He seems to forget that in Utah we read the national press and we know that the Republicans have more than $8 million ready to spend in their attempts to buy" control of the Congress. But issues, not money, will impress Utah voters. Mr. Burton must bear the burden of his eight year record in Congress. All the facts will be laid out for the voters of Utah to examine. We will point out such things as the Congressional Quarterly report of Burton's low attendance record and anemic January 16, 1970, voting record in Congress. (CQ., pages 144-14show Congressmen Burton answered only 67 of the 1969 roll-ca- ll votes in the House of Representatives. His voting participation for the entire 90th Congress was only 79rr). Instead of the Utah voters receiving only nice little reports on the Congressmans adventures in Washington, they will get the full report of the Burton performance in Congress. They will have the opportunity to weigh the record of our hard-workiCongressman productive Senator Moss, and our part-timBurton. We Democrats welcome the comparison. Laurence Burton Issues, not personalities, will be prominent in the 1970 Utah Senatorial race, according to Rep. Laurence J. Burton (R-Uta- h). In the last few days I have met with many groups of Utahns, and I have found that they are interested in concrete issues, such as pollution, Vietnam, the cost of living, and crime in the streets, Rep. Bur. ton said. People want to hear issue discussed by the candidate, and not mere campaign rhetoric on the personality of the opponent. The Utah Representative, who announced his candidacy for the United States Senate recently, is here at home making several Lincoln Day speeches during the Congressional recess. A major concern here in Utah, and throughout the country, is the problem of pollution. My membership on the Interior Committee during the seven years I have been in the U.S. House of Representatives has given me a thorough understanding of the nature and extent of the problem and of ways of combatting it. I am greatly encouraged by the importance President Nixon is placing on environmental programs, and I intend to continue working in Congress to see that measures to improve the quality of our environment are passed and in- not an immediis advancing ate pullout which would endanger the lives of our American is what I support. boys Burton, a member of the House Select Committee on Small Business, commented that he appreciated the concern of those he met over the high cost of living. It is time for a return to fiscal responsibility, so that prices will not continue to rise and those on fixed incomes will not continue to suffer from inflationary trends. One other issue which is foremost in many people's minds is that of the frightening increase in the crime rate in the country. The people I have talked with want Congress to enact legislation to curtail it. There are many additional issues which I will discuss during the campaign, for example, education, tax reform, equal employment opportunities, etc., but the key to the election will be this: Utahns do not want a a man with double standarls man who says one thing in Utah and who does something else in Washington. The people want a man in Washington who represents their philosophy. I think they will find that I am the man to represent their beliefs properly. Burton said he will campaign in every section of the state. He has thus far addressed large group of people in Ogden, Salt stituted. Lake City, and Panguitch.
