VALENTINE of dots, with one dot representing each letter of his name. If his young lady guesses his name and tells him, he rewards her with an Easter Egg the following Easter. Most Valentines Day customs deal with romance or the choice of mates. Single girls had many ways of learning the identity of their future husbands. Sometimes a girl wrote her boyfriends names on bits of paper and rolled each name in a little piece of clay. She then dropped the cay into water. The first scrap of paper to float to the top was supposed to contain the name of her true valentine. Some unmarried girls pinned five bay leaves to their pillows on the Eve of Saint Valentines Day. They pinned one leaf to the center of the pillow', and one to each corner, and believed they woud see their future husbands in their dreams if the charm worked. If a girl saw only one object in her first peep through the keyhole, she supposedly had little chance of being married that year. In some places, an unmarried girl w'ould strike her forehead w'ith a folded rose petal. If the petal cracked, the girl knew her valentine loved her. Miss Jackson will present the concert in the interest of the community center and chapel service building fund of the Church of God in Christ, said the Rev. M. A. Givens, Jr. A recording artist since 1954, Miss Jackson has produced more than 20 albums, such as What Child Is This, A The Power Mighty Fortress, and the Glory and Every-tim-e I Feel the Spirit. It is her belief that gospel music serves a religious purpose. Accordingly, she has rejected numerous lucrative offers for performances she considers inappropriate to gospel singing. One of her greatest concerts was presented in 1960 when official Washington turned out to hear her sing on the same stage that had been denied Marian Anderson two decades earlier. Miss Jackson has performed at the White House during the Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson administrations. Tickets for the March 1 concert may be obtained at the Salt Palace, Sears stores in Utah, Cottonwood Mall, Calvary Baptist Church, 532 E. 7th South, Church of God in Christ, 862 West 2nd South, and the Ebony Mall, 11 South 3rd West |
